Attention, Energy families! The Energy Institute High School InvenTeam cordially invites you to their Mid-Grant Technical Review of their biodiesel bus project. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 28th from 5:00 - 7:30 pm. This formal review will showcase the team's progress and plans for their invention as they prepare for EurekaFest at MIT this June. Industry professionals, leaders of the Houston Independent School District, and the Houston Public Media have been invited.

The Energy InvenTeam is a diverse group of 14 students, whose goal is to promote the use of biodiesel in buses in order to reduce carbon emissions. They are grateful to have an opportunity such as this one! Your feedback and suggestions will greatly help them improve their invention.

View our blog & progress here and here .
The team hopes to see you there!
On Thursday, February 22nd, Energy's African-American Culture Club hosted their first ever Open Mic Night. Madison Sidney, a junior, started the club to increase awareness of African-American culture on our campus. When planning this event, the club wanted to create an open, non-biased, and judgment-free space for anybody to express themselves. Students performed poems, sang songs, and played musical instruments. Towards the end of the night, attendees had an open discussion about race relations and problems affecting the black community. The African-American Culture Club will be hosting another Open Mic Night next month and everyone is invited to attend.

Last Wednesday, February 21st, qualified students were inducted into Energy's chapter of the National Honor Society . Founded in 1921, NHS is an organization for exemplary high school scholars who have exhibited scholarship, service, leadership, and character. At the ceremony, inductees were sworn in by reciting the society's oath, after lighting their candles one by one. Once the induction concluded, senior members were invited onto stage to receive recognition for their accomplishments by Ms. De La Rosa. Following words from Ms. Lambropoulos, attendees of the ceremony took part in a reception to celebrate the students' successes. Congratulations to the new members of NHS! We would also like to thank the advisors, Ms. De La Rosa and Mr. Johnson, for organizing the event.

On Tuesday, February 20th, Energy's FRC Robotics Team --- The Energy HEROs --- completed their six week build season and are preparing for their upcoming competitions. On their last day, parents and students celebrated the completion of the team's robot, and the team's driver demonstrated its competition performance. This year, the FRC theme is PowerUp; teams were tasked with creating a robot that could transport boxes onto two different size scales, one reaching up to 6 feet and the other only about 1 ½ feet off the floor.

The robot also faces the task of pushing cubes off of the field through a hole and climbing a rung at t he end of the match. Teams are placed on alliances of three and compete for a ranking score. The top eight teams at the end of each qualification match during regional competitions and select the lower ranked teams for permanent alliances going into quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. The alliance that wins the regional event is given a ticket to the world championship games held in Detroit, MI at the Cobo Center and Houston, TX at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Our team, 5892, will be competing at Lone Star Central Regional at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory from March 14th to 17th. They will also compete at Bayou Regional in Kenner, LA at Pontchartrain Center from March 24th to 27th.

On Saturday, February 24th, The Woods Project (TWP) hosted its annual fundraising event, Walk for The Woods Project at the Ripley House Neighborhood Center. At the walk, Energy's TWP members, along with other TWP participants, walked a five-kilometer trail around the historic East End. After the event, participants were able to enjoy activities, such as climbing a rock wall, listening to live music, and meeting with past and current TWP members to learn more about the experiences of their summer backpacking trip. The walk also helps our students attend a summer trip, in which they travel to a national park for a two-week backing experience. At the national park, different TWP high school members walk five miles a day to explore the beauty of nature while strengthening their environmental awareness, critical thinking, perseverance, collaboration, and independence skills.
STATE of the AIR Gala
On Wednesday, February 21st, students from Ms. Mein's AP Biology class presented their ExploraVision projects at Air Alliance Houston's State of the Air Gala at the Health Museum. They also discussed the effects of certain pollutants on human organs with guests. Students were stationed near different organs throughout the exhibit hall. Daniel Nadel and Jose Saravia were especially excited to be near a beating heart!  Former Mayor Bill White discussed the importance of clean air in Houston, and reminded guests of the successes the city has had in cleaning up our atmosphere. He encouraged guests to continue to fight for clean air in order to protect future generations, like our Energy students. We truly appreciate the invitation of Leticia Ablaza to participate in this unique exhibition, and we look forward to future projects with Air Alliance Houston.
On Wednesday, February 21st, juniors from Cohort 5 visited Tres Robles, a sustainable urban farm located in Houston. At the farm, they met with two brothers: Dan Garcia Pratts, a retired engineer, and Thomas Garcia Pratts, an urban farmer who run Tres Robles. They mentored the students and gave them advice on sustainability and efficiency in the agricultural field to help them to answer their project's driving question: "How can we reimagine Texas's agricultural infrastructure to ensure a sustainable future? " For this project, students must innovate farming methods in order to create more efficient ways to grow food. They have already created sketch and CAD designs of their ideas and are currently in the process of building prototypes. Eventually, they will compare their solutions with traditional methods to determine their effectiveness.

Last Monday, February 16th, freshman from the AC/DC cohort went on a field trip to Hermann Park. There, students observed the park's biodiversity and ecological su ccession and compared each aspect to those of Buffalo Bayou Park, which they visited earlier this month. They observed more biodiversity at Hermann Park than Buffalo Bayou because it was not as affected by Hurricane Harvey's floods. Through their visit to two of the most well-known parks in Houston, they collected footage for their project and learned about the importance of sustainability. With their knowledge, students will now create educational documentaries about global conservation. We can't wait to see how their documentaries turn out!
This week, Energy would like to highlight the psychology classes taught by both Mr. Fox and Mr. Platon. Mr. Fox teaches AP Psychology, while Mr. Platon teaches Prep Psychology, both courses focusing on the interaction between mind and behavior. Psychology is an interesting subject, and many students enjoy the class. For example, senior Angel Gomez stated, "I like this class because it opens your mind more and makes you think critically." Students have created a book about development, cognition, and learning and developed an experiment on human behavior and consciousness. Overall, Energy is happy to have Mr. Platon and Mr. Fox teaching the complexities of the human mind and its functions to our curious students. If you are interested in taking the class, make sure to sign up for it on your next course selection sheet. Also, if you would like to learn more about how to apply psychology in the real world, you can join the Psychology Club with Mr. Fox on Tuesdays during the second half of B lunch.

On Monday, February 19th, Energy's Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, SHPE, and Energy's InvenTeam welcomed chemical engineers Joshua Bordin, Vitor de Miranda Enrique, and Alicia Reed from Siemens Energy to kick off National Engineer Week.  All three professionals come from very diverse college careers, ranging from the University of São Carlos, Brazil, Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.

They shared advice about their college experience, staying up-to-date with energy innovations, what it means to be an undecided engineer, and the importance of taking advantage of internships. The chemical engineers also shared what a typical workday in their field looks like. Mr. Miranda and Mr. Bordin focus on project work, while Ms. Reed takes hazardous precautions for ongoing projects. As a final word of advice, they told the students, "the energy field is always changing, therefore; be up to date and if at any time you choose to change your job field, take stepping stones that will take you from job A to job B, eventually leading you to job Z."

On Thursday, February 22nd, Energy seniors participated in "Pilots in the School", a program sponsored by the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP). OBAP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers. Members encourage diversity in the industry by supporting aspiring aviation professionals through mentoring, scholarships, training, and youth-focused education programs. Mr. Singo Sprauve and Ms. Juanita Hines from OBAP shared key experiences and advice relating to career opportunities. One such opportunity mentioned was the Greater Houston Black Chamber, which is dedicated to supporting small African-American businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals.

In his journey to become a commercial pilot, Mr. Singo went to Georgia Tech for four years and served in the Navy for over 20 years. After that, he got his first aviation opportunity with Mesa Airline. Ms. Hines, on the other hand, wanted to become an athletic trainer director for the NFL during her undergraduate years. Although she ended up transitioning to major in Public Relations, she is now running her own business helping others get the job and promotions they want.
