messageMessage from the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)

Good Afternoon,

I would like to provide some additional academic details regarding the Principal's notice sent on Monday about the holiday time on July 2nd and 3rd. These holidays are intended to be in recognition of the challenging and demanding schedules we all currently face, but I want to acknowledge there are some pre-scheduled educational activities that will need to continue during these dates.  Scheduled academic activities, including classes, exams, thesis defenses, for graduate and undergraduate students courses will proceed as planned during July 2nd and 3rd. Personal time will be granted to faculty and staff involved in these activities to use at a later date.

Thank you,

Mark F. Green, PhD, PEng
Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)

remoteReminder - Remote Teaching Support

The Faculty of Arts and Science is offering support and practical resources to ease the shift to remote teaching. Our Workshop Series: Preparing for Remote Teaching will continue throughout the summer. Topics covered include course design, assessments, technology, asynchronous activities, designing PowerPoints, and more. Please see the schedule on our new page QUartsci.com/remote-teaching and join us when you can - no registration is required! We will also be adding additional resources to this webpage soon, including a list of technologies available to support teaching and how to get access to them, so please stay tuned for updates!

Questions can be sent to [email protected] where they will be triaged to receive the right type and level of support (multimedia, LMS or instructional Design).

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the immigration process for international students, with major implications still being seen in study plans, employment and visa applications.

Join the QUIC and the Office of the AVPI as we guide you through the questions students might be asking you, and tips for how best to respond.

This session will:
  • Clarify the role of RISIAs in advising international students
  • Provide an overview of the updates to the immigration process
  • Identify resources for staff and faculty to point students towards
This session will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, June 30th at 10:00 - 11:00.

incompleteReminder - Incomplete Grades from Fall 2019 and Winter 2020

If a course instructor gave a student an incomplete grade in Fall 2019 or Winter 2020, the grade will remain incomplete (IN) until 15 September 2020 unless a change of grade is submitted sooner. The grade will lapse to an F on 15 September if the outstanding work has not been submitted, graded, and the grade change processed by that time. Instructors, please ensure that students with incomplete grades are aware of the deadline you have set for outstanding course work.

As students will not be returning to campus in September, please consider alternative ways to assess students' performance in the course, other than a deferred final exam. Options include alternative forms of assessment that can be submitted through OnQ, or unproctored quizzes in OnQ. If a deferred exam is the only option for completion of course work, please contact Arts and Science Online at  [email protected] as soon as possible to make arrangements for online proctoring of the exam.

Arts and Science online is providing a series of workshops for instructors on remote teaching. A recording of the recent workshop on assessment will be made available, and a specific workshop on alternatives to final exams will be held in July-August. You can find details of the workshops at  https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/remote-teaching
