One year ago, in October 2017, I felt I had experienced the best ten days of my life. I had the honor of presenting Intelligent Disobedience to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England, presenting Courageous Followership to the European Commission, and training a dozen wonderful professionals in teaching courageous followership at a two day program that followed the International Leadership Association Global Conference in Brussels.
It was with some surprise that the last ten days in October 2018 rivaled that experience in it richness. While the venues were not as heady as in 2017, the participants with whom I interacted were every bit as inspiring to me in their dedication to our common work of creating a better world.
What made these three events particularly rich for me was the tremendous ethnic, gender, age and geographic diversity in each gathering. Each was the most diverse iteration of itself in my years of experience with them.

AUTHORS CONFERENCE

50 authors, all committed to the mission of our publisher, Berrett-Koehler, to create a world that works for all, gathered at Pendle Hill, the Quaker retreat center where I wrote most of The Courageous Follower.

I presented the application of Intelligent Disobedience for children. The response was a standing ovation and offers to connect me to professionals in early childhood development to further test the tools I have developed and spread their adoption.

We are still offering a free download of the workbook that accompanies the video.

COURAGEOUS FOLLOWER
TRAIN THE TRAINER
Eighteen educators and trainers spent two days at the McArthur School of Leadership at Palm Beach Atlantic University, experiencing how I conduct courageous follower training.. There is a significant re-ordering of concepts and beliefs about following that need to be achieved for the developmental activity to be effective and powerful. They graduated with an understanding of this and with materials to integrate into their own approach for teaching the relationship of leading and following. At least as many others expressed regret that they learned of the training too late to participate. I will do a better job next year of giving ample notice about another training program I hope to hold in Canada.

THE INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION GLOBAL CONFERENCE

Over 1100 academics and practitioners participated in the ILA Global Conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. I gave three separate presentations. One of these was the first workshop Bob McGannon and I have ever conducted together.

Bob lives in Australia most of the year and has also written a book on Intelligent Disobedience

We approach the subject from different and complementary perspectives that enhance what either of us can do alone. I encourage you to look at Bob's website to get a feel for his approach.

COLLEAGUE'S WORK
My dear friend and colleague Bill Treasurer has just published a new book he co-authored entitled The Leadership Killer: Reclaiming Humility in an Age of Arrogance. Bill's work is very close to mine. His previous books have focused on courage. This new book concerns the tendency of power to distort into arrogance. Courageous followers are committed to reducing the harm caused by leadership arrogance and helping the leader restore balance in performing their role. This promises to be a very good read.

POLITICS
Readers of this newsletter in the US and around the world were watching the recent elections in the US. Whether the results of the election encouraged or disappointed you, I offer this thought:
Leaders in any domain may or may not use power beneficially. It is therefore critical that the people closest to them, whom we might call the senior followers, accept responsibility for supporting the leader's positive actions and for questioning or challenging actions that slip toward an abuse of power. The earlier and more skillfully this is done, the better the chances of success.
Taking the long view, we need to inculcate in those who will rise to work in the offices of elected officials, or in the office of the CEO in the private or non-profit sectors, with the awareness, sense of obligation and skills to stand up to leaders who begin violating the trust placed in them by those they serve. That is the project I am committed to and for which I invite your continued participation.
As this is being mailed on Veteran's Day in the US let us also honor the courageous service, and often the sacrifice, made by members of the military and their families.
Whatever the external challenges, may the upcoming holiday season be filled with many reasons for gratitude and happiness.  As always, let me know if I can be of help to you in the coming year.
