CHAMBER PRESIDENT SPEAKS TO STAR STUDENTS...
Article by:  The Monticello News
Kevin Davis of Piedmont Academy and his STAR teacher Ralph Hickman, along with Alina Jablonski and her STAR teacher, Christie McAlum of Jasper County High School were honored with a luncheon sponsored by the Monticello Kiwanis Club Monday.

Mr. Davis was named county wide STAR. STAR stands for Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition, and the program is sponsored statewide by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE). Jimmy Jordan, Director of Membership for PAGE, presided over the STAR ceremony.

Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce President Pam Mayer was the guest speaker, and she spoke about community. She discussed what the COC's role is in the community, and talked about how we work together in a small community and we can be personal.

She said Jasper County is central Georgia's best kept secret. Jasper County is filled with natural resources, and is rich in history, she said. She talked about some famous people from Jasper County, illustrating that humble beginnings do not mean success is hard to come by. She talked about some of the challenges of a small community.

Mrs. Mayer told the student, "Our community is proud of you." She encouraged the students to go off and get their schooling, but then to return to Jasper County, or some other small town, and make a difference.    Read full article

Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy

Perhaps you've noticed the new display in the Chamber of Commerce window on The Square featuring The Cat In The Hat.  Perhaps you've noticed people sporting a lapel button that recognizes their continued support of early literacy through monthly auto-pay donations to Ferst Foundation.  Perhaps you've noticed Seuss On the Loose shirts in bright colors being worn by those preparing for the annual literacy festival.   Perhaps you've spotted the Cat In The Hat in one of our schools.  All these "noticing's" remind us it is time to celebrate Literacy Week beginning February 26 and ending with Seuss on the Loose on Saturday, March 3, at Jasper County High School from 10-12 noon with a costume contest, games, prizes, free books, and tons of fun-all to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.  Again, the Cat In The Hat Express will provide train rides.

The Ferst Foundation addresses one of the most basic issues of childhood literacy-ensuring the availability of quality books in the home so that parents can read to their child.  Research tells us that the single most significant factor influencing a child's early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school . Books are delivered not just once, but every month, up to 60 times in the child's critical years of development from birth to age five.  The program is free to participating families and it is made possible through the partnership of volunteers and community partners, all at the low cost of $36 per child per year! Volunteers called Community Action Teams (CAT) raise funds, register children and promote the program.

The Ferst Foundation CAT in Jasper County is working hard to meet its goals. We currently send 360 books per month to children aged birth-five in Jasper County and plan to increase that number as funds permit.  We know that providing books to families gives young children the vocabulary opportunities invaluable for language acquisition and reading skills, thus preparing them for their formal education, reducing school remediation costs, preventing potential dropouts, creating a capable workforce, and giving all students the confidence for leadership opportunities. Literacy is at the heart of economic development and is the single factor that underpins most social issues.  The future of Georgia businesses, and indeed the state's financial system, depends on the ability of our rising generation to meet the strong challenges of a technology-based economy, and the Ferst Foundation program provides a solid first-step to achieving that goal.

The more that you read,
The more things you'll know.
The more that you learn,
The more places you'll go.
