Freshman Frenzy Forms Friendships with Fun
Freshman Frenzy was jam packed this year!  The fun began as we lined up to board the buses while our Senior Mentors treated us to a healthy pre-frenzy pump-up.  After taking our seats, they kept us entertained for the entire ride.  It was sort of like eating at the shmorg, the way they served a bit of cheering, a little TABC trivia, some of our favorite chazanus selections from the school's legendary Hallel, a generous helping of sports predictions, a hint of ice-breaker games, a taste of stand-up comedy, and even a sample of free-style rhyming.  The drive to Bowler City flew by in no time, and we were rolling just as fast as we could check our shoe sizes.  Some of us looked like professional bowlers, others figured out what the holes in the ball are used for, but everyone jumped in with the right attitude - we were among friends!  We smiled at the goofy gag names that appeared on the screen, we laughed as the balls got stuck in the gutter, we cheered when the pins crashed, and we stood in awe as Dr. Prager's superb technique humbled us all.  The day continued with a scrumptious pizza feast, compliments of EJ's, and as we enjoyed our lunch we relished the opportunity to meet with Rabbeim and teachers who came to join us on the avenue.  It was so easy to introduce ourselves and get to know them in this comfortable setting, and when they came with us to New Roc City it was even better!  We spent the afternoon playing classic arcade games like Pac Man and Overdrive while indulging in some hot new titles like Jurassic Park and Justice League.  Teaming up for Laser Tag brought out the commando in us all, which we tamed with a calming round of Mini-Golf, and everyone enjoyed spying on the Monroe College mens' basketball team run drills during practice when we needed a breather.  The Mustangs are a division three team and their coach seemed pretty intense, though Rabbi Finkelstein assured us that Coach Norm and Coach Donald could show him a thing or two.  Looking back, it's hard to believe we could have so much fun in one day, but then again we're ALL IN at TABC and this is who we are!

Holocaust Studies
Mrs. Rose Sirota, Survivor,
Addresses Holocaust Studies Class
On Thursday, October 4th, students in Mrs. Reichardt's Holocaust Studies class were privileged to hear a talk by Mrs. Rosa Sirota, a Holocaust survivor and noted educator in Bergen County. Mrs. Sirota was born in Lvov, Poland, and her story is one which our students found most inspiring. She spent one class period detailing her experiences with students and yet another for a Q and A, which both she and the students enjoyed tremendously. Although Rosa says that she takes no credit for being "smart" in order to ensure her survival, and attributes it to luck, one student had a different view which he shared in his thank you letter to Rosa:"To be honest, I don't believe in luck, but I do believe in Hashem and I saw him at every twist and turn of your story."

One other student in the class expressed the feelings of most students when he ended his letter by saying,"I don't see you as a victim at all, for you are a true survivor."

Students in this class will be working throughout the year on an interdisciplinary project where they will be using the stories of the survivors they meet to create an original work of theater entitled, "Bare Witness."
"Bare Witness":  Project-Based Learning
at Work in Holocaust Studies

In this class we attempt to bridge the gap between a typical history class and a theater production. In addition to learning about the history of the Holocaust, racism, genocide and World War II, students will spend months bonding with survivors and getting to know one another while hearing the survivors' experiences firsthand. Over the course of the school year, students will continue to build relationships, bridging the gap between generations. Students will use journaling, play writing, poetry and visual art to process their feelings, thoughts and insights while working collaboratively to create an original play which will incorporate the survivors' stories in order to bring their experiences to life on the stage. This inter-generational storytelling aims to create new "witnesses" to the Holocaust.

This project will use hands-on experiential learning through the Project Based Learning method, PBL. This method has been shown to truly engage students in a whole learning environment. Students "own" the learning and it becomes a part of who they are. This program is essential at this time as our students are the final generation to have the opportunity to meet and interact with the Holocaust generation. Our students have the responsibility to bear witness for future generations, hence the creation of this new initiative, "Bare Witness", an original student theatrical production.
Sephardic Minyan Resumes
Exciting news!  The  sephardic   Minyan  at TABC is back.  We will begin this Tuesday morning, led by Rabbi Jachter, in room 5.  Shacharit begins at 7:40 A.M. sharp with hud.  A complete  Sephardic  service will be held replete with Birkat Kohanim, led by our three  Sephardic  Kohanim!
Torah U'Madda
Comes Alive at TABC
Torah U'Madda at its best. Rabbi Jachter addressed Mrs. Goldenberg's ninth grade biology class to help them understand the concept of Spontaneous Generation through a Jewish lens. Rabbi Jachter discussed how Torah and science are approaching the topic from different perspectives. Rabbi Jachter brought in the Gemara in Masachet Shabbos, which discusses this very topic.

Theater Shabbaton
The first TABC Theater Department Shabbaton was held this weekend in Teaneck and was a huge success.  Students from every grade were in attendance. Rami Levin, 2020, and Secretary of TABC's chapter of the International Thespian Society spearheaded the event. Rami brought this new initiative to Mrs Lopkin, Director of Performing Arts, at the end of the summer. "I would like to organize a Shabbaton for the theater students and incoming freshmen who audition for the fall show. I think it would be a great way for everyone to see what we're all about. ". Mrs Lopkin agreed wholeheartedly. Rami was responsible for organizing housing, meals and spreading the word. The Levin family hosted a scrumptious Friday night dinner followed by improv games run by Mrs. Lopkin, students were welcomed at Congregation Arzei Darom for davening and then headed to the Rothstein's for a delicious lunch. Mrs. Lopkin ran another round of theater games. Rabbi Fridman stopped by for dessert and offered an inspiring d'var Torah where he connected the themes of parshat Breishit to the arts.  He explained how Judaism has a rich tradition of connecting to Hashem through the arts.  Mrs. Lopkin hosted sedah shlishit where students had the  opportunity to reminisce about previous years' plays and chat excitedly about Treasure Island, this year's fall play.  Rabbi Nachbar, joined us for seudah shlishit. Rabbi Nachbar, shmoozed with the students reminiscing about the roles they played in previous years' shows. He then shared a d'var Torah where he spoke about how Hashem is a creator and how we must all act our role just as our biblical ancestors did. Shabbat concluded with students singing Mizmor L'David, davening Ma'ariv, and enjoying a musical Havdalah.  It was truly an incredible experience for all!
