Short stories sometimes get short shrift in the literary world. Collections of them are harder to sell than novels. Their form is often treated as a training ground for the longer work of a novel. Yet the short story market is thriving, and the story form continues to develop in innovative ways that are particular to the genre. For this discussion, a panel of writers and editors will talk about the art and business of this essential literary form. Panelists include:
- David Afsharirad, editor of The Year's Best Military and Adventure SF series
- Oscar Casares, author of the short story collection Brownsville and others
- Jack Kaulfus, author of the short story collection Tomorrow or Forever
- Rebecca Markovits, co-editor of the literary magazine American Short Fiction

The Narrative Craft of Academic Writing

This class demystifies academic writing. Learn to navigate unfamiliar new genres, understand the audience's expectations, and explain ideas with clarity. Dr. Saylor will analyze model texts from diverse disciplines, including grant proposals, abstracts, and journal articles, examining structure and style. The class will also give resources for grammar, citation, and writing in English as an additional language.
Registration closes Thursday, September 13, at 5 p.m. CST. Everyone who registers will have access to the class recording for one week.

Narrative Lab: Experiments for Concocting Livelier, More Interesting Prose

Learn to conduct experiments in point of view, voice, structure, etc. in order to break free from cliches, leap over dead ends, and generate writing that is new and exciting. The class will begin with an inquiry: What do we have so far and what else can it be? The instructor will address boring plots, dull aesthetics, placating voices, and cliche themes. For those in editing mode, the class will offer strategies for taking bigger risks, re-seeing your own work, and making daring changes to things you really love but that simply aren't working.
Registration closes on Thursday, September 13, at midnight. Walk-in registrations will be accepted, as space allows.

Volunteer at our Texas Book Festival Booth!

We love the
Texas Book Festival, and we're excited to once again participate as a festival exhibitor! We're in search of WLT members to work as volunteers at our booth.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Texas literary community and to meet the writers and readers of Texas!
At our booth (Tent 3, Booths 313-314), we have one table with information about WLT programming, and one table where members of WLT who are authors may promote their books to the general public. We're looking for volunteers to work two-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both days of the festival in Austin. Duties will include speaking to festival attendees about upcoming WLT events and membership benefits; signing up new members; and managing the schedule of authors promoting their books.
