On Display: "Mixing It Up!"

An exhibition of mixed media artwork will be on display from March 1 through March 26 in Swarthmore Borough Hall. The public is invited to the artists' opening reception on Friday, March 2 from 6-8 pm.

The Mixed Media Studio is a group of local artists who meet on Tuesday nights at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford to be inspired by each other, to create art in a collegial atmosphere, and occasionally to indulge together in some wine, chocolate or pizza from Gaetano's. Members of the group exhibiting in this show are Nancy Barch, Wendy Cotton, Gail Herring, Patricia Kerr, Michele Southworth, Molly Wing-Berman, and Kurt Winkelman.

Mixed media lends itself to a wide variety of materials, styles and subject matter, and the group takes enjoyment and inspiration from the diversity of work generated by its artists. The artists themselves come to mixed media from a variety of other art disciplines, including ceramics, watercolor and acrylic painting, pastel drawing, graphic design, and even botanical illustration. Nancy Barch, who teaches workshops locally and exhibits throughout the Philadelphia area, describes the pleasures of the medium in this way: "Mixed media is very exciting for any artist, as the plans you make constantly go awry. That means there is always a Plan B rattling around in your head. It makes for a very creative process."
