COMMANDER'S CORNER
Greetings!

Can you believe we are in October already, where has this year gone? Make sure to keep an eye out for the little ones out this year on Halloween night.

We have been super busy at the chapter house servicing our fellow veterans and family members with their claims, I am very thankful for the Chapter Service Officer and all the volunteers at the office to help keep moving us forward. Deborah Magish our Adjutant has turned in her letter of resignation dated Oct 22, 2018, I want to thank her for her time and dedication to her potion, Deborah still plans on being an active member of the chapter as time allows. I have appointed Dr. Carl Forkner as Acting Adjutant until the chapter members can approve him at our general meeting Nov 8, 2018, he has been approved by the Executive Board as of Oct 22, 2018. He is going to be a great asset to our chapter and our mission statement of fulling the promises to the men and women who served.

  • We are getting geared up for the Golden Corral fundraising, please contact the office to sign up for a shift to help raise funds for the chapter (see this info below).
  • The VA S.E. Clinic popcorn project and the rifle raffle are in need of more volunteers, contact us at the office if you are interested.

DAV Dept of Arizona Newsletter can be found here.

If any member has any thing they would like to post in our newsletter or need to get out to the membership; please don't hesitate to contact us at the office.

Peace love & light

Commander

My motto in life is; "It's all good"!
A WORD FROM OUR ADJUTANT
Greetings!

By way of introduction, I am a US Navy Veteran who served three decades as a Naval Flight Officer (NFO), Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), Naval Analyst, and CNO & Flag Staff Officer. I served in three anti-terrorism operations, including El Dorado Canyon in 1986, Infinite Justice/Enduring Freedom in 2001, and Noble Eagle 2002-2005. I finished my career with five years of joint tour time as an Assistant Professor at the US Air Force Air War College before retiring in November, 2011. My philosophy is simple: non sibi sed patriae (not self but country).

As your Chapter Adjutant, I will keep you informed on the great things that Chapter 8 is doing. I have already started streamlining and documenting processes to make us a leaner organization where we can spend more time serving veterans and less time doing administrative tasks, while maintaining a standard of excellence in all we do.

A special shout-out and thanks to my predecessor, Deborah Magish, for her devotion to duty as Adjutant and taking the time to let me "learn while doing" the many tasks of the position. She will continue to be a wonderful member of our great Chapter 8!

Semper Fortis,
Dr. Carl Forkner
Acting Adjutant
THOUGHT'S FROM OUR CHAPLAIN
Greetings!

One of the dangers of serving in a helping organization is that the helpers can get tired. Service officers can get tired. One service officer reviewed his day with me a while back, saying he had seen 12 veterans that day, helping each with their claims. God bless that service officer!

We each have a role in helping, be it commanders, adjutants, senior and junior vice commanders, other officers, volunteers, and auxiliary officers and members. All that helping, coordinating, leading, listening, driving, and serving takes energy. The truth is we each have only a limited amount of energy.

So please, we need to be resilient helpers. Remember to step back now and then. Keep your balance. Remember your priorities. If you will pace yourself, breathe, get your exercise, get your rest, and be connected to other people, including worshiping communities, you have a greater chance to be resilient, balanced, happy and whole..

Faithfully yours,
Chaplain Paul Soderquist

Theme: Kilroy Was Here
This year our Parade Theme will be Kilroy Was Here – the phrase and artwork that became an iconic symbol, a legend among the millions of military men and women who served during World War II and on into the Korean War. Long before the internet, Kilroy was the first truly viral meme. Everywhere that US forces went, you would find Kilroy popping up in unexpected places across all of the theaters of war visited by American troops.
Kilroy came to signify the US super-GI who always got there first. He was everywhere, a superhero, a guardian of our troops and a huge boost to morale. He could always be depended on – the first one there and the last to leave. Competition to inscribe the graffiti in obscure locations kept the battle-weary soldiers busy, and Kilroy’s appearances kept them inspired. His presence was so ubiquitous wherever American servicemen went, that rumors popped up saying Hitler himself issued orders to find Kilroy, and that Stalin came face-to-face with Kilroy inside a Potsdam outhouse!
This simple graffiti captured the imagination of GIs everywhere they went. By the end of World War II, “Kilroy Was Here” had achieved cult-like status, springing up in the unlikeliest of places. Rumor has it that Kilroy has been to Mount Everest, The Statute of Liberty, The Great Wall of China and the surface of the moon. In fact, the National Park Service reports that two engravings, marked “Kilroy Was Here” are tucked into corners of both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. This “signature” of the memorial confers a further “tip of the hat” to the generation that served in World War II.

Please join us this year, as we celebrate with Kilroy to honor and thank our Veterans, active Military and their families.

It is that time of year that Golden Corral partners with DAV to help us raise money to support our veterans.

We have 2 locations in our area and we are in need of volunteers to man the tables until Veterans Day.

Disabled American Veterans
Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to a single purpose: Empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America's injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.
