Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
(September 15 - October 15)

Lizzie Velasquez is a global motivational speaker, anti-bullying activist, social media personality, and author. Velasquez was born with a rare syndrome called Marfanoid-progeroid-lipodystrophy syndrome that, among other symptoms, prevents her from accumulating body fat and gaining weight. Her condition resulted in bullying during her childhood and ultimately inspired her to take up motivational speaking.
Velasquez began her public advocacy pursuits in 2013 with her breakthrough
TEDx Talk titled "How Do You Define Yourself?" Her talk attracted millions of viewers and lead to various appearances on The View, in the Huffington Post, Associated Press, and many other national and international media outlets. Velasquez is an Executive Producer of the award-winning documentary based on her life, "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story" which follows her personal journey from a cyber bullying victim to a global anti-bullying activist.

NASW policy statements set the parameters for NASW's positions on a broad range of public policy and professional issues and are featured in Social Work Speaks, a comprehensive collection of policies. Board of Social Work Examiners New Regulations
New Regulations Went to Effect 9/17/18
Major changes include:
- Coursework that is accepted in LCSW application
- Hours required and timeline for LCSW application
- How CEUs (Ethics, Clinical, Social/Cultural Competence) are counted
- Expectations for Professional Conduct/Appropriate Behavior
- Clinical Supervision by Videoconference
- Requirement for Client Waiver of Confidentiality
NASW-NJ plans to distribute a Tip Sheet outlining changes in the Regulations to all NASW-NJ Members. Watch for it in your email!
Questions about the new Regulations will be addressed once the Tip Sheet is distributed and posted on our website. Stay tuned!

License/Certification for NJ Social Workers!
The renewal period has ended. If your job requires you to have a NJ Social Work license or certification and you did not renew it, you'll need to have it reinstated before you can practice social work in NJ.

Attorneys providing legal services to detained immigrant children separated from their parents have played a critical role in ensuring that these children are safe, provided with information about their legal rights, and reunited with their parents when possible. However, many unaccompanied children, including some with histories of abuse, trafficking, and other harms, have faced complicated legal proceedings without lawyers to represent them. This webinar will provide an overview of the intersection of family separation and legal services for unaccompanied children, from the perspective of a practitioner on the ground; the national picture; and the federal policy changes under consideration.

NASW Legal Defense Fund (LDF) Has Your Back
LDF has been promoting social justice for more than 45 years. Established in 1972 to provide financial legal assistance and to support cases and issues of concern to NASW members and the social work profession, LDF also offers educational programs to improve the legal status and knowledge of social workers, including these:

Legal Issue of the Month. These articles present an overview of legal topics important to social work practice, focusing on a recent court decision or emerging legal issue. This archive of articles for NASW members addresses commonly asked questions as well as hot-button emerging issues.

"Friend of the Court" Briefs. LDF's Amicus Brief Database, an online reference tool exclusively for NASW members, houses legal briefs filed by NASW in significant cases across the country and in the Supreme Court. Friend of the court briefs are accepted by courts to help understand aspects of issues that may not be fully addressed by the parties to the litigation, or where specialized knowledge may be helpful in reaching a conclusion in high profile cases.

HIPAA Toolkit. LDF developed the "Help with HIPAA" online toolkit for members and has analyzed HIPAA's medical privacy regulations in relation to NASW's
Code of Ethics. NASW provides members with information and resources related to clinical practice, and this toolkit contains a comprehensive compilation of online HIPAA forms, office policies, and sample documents easily adapted to an individual social worker's practice.
