Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
The safety and security of our students, faculty and staff are our top priorities, so this past Wednesday the Sherriff's Office trained our faculty and staff on how to respond to an active shooter. We now need to talk to students, but thought large group assemblies was not the best venue. I have recorded a video message that students will see Tuesday morning during 1st period and then we have asked teachers to talk to students throughout the day about where they would hide while in that classroom if we had a shooter. The most important message in the video is for students to share any information that they have that could affect the safety of our campus. We need our students to feel comfortable sharing information to keep us all safe. In addition to our required monthly fire drills, we have decided to conduct monthly intruder drills during the times when something is more likely to happen such as between classes, at lunch and dismissal. We feel it is better to be prepared by having students think through different scenarios, than to be in a panic mode if something was to ever occur. Please talk to your child, so they are prepared for these discussions on Tuesday.

It is time to complete the annual SAC Needs Assessment Survey. Please take a few minutes to complete the parent survey. Thank you.

The FSA Writing exam for 9th graders is March 1st and 2nd and for 10th graders March 5th & 6th. English teachers will tell students which day students are testing. The exam is one 120min session. Students can leave after 90mins if they are done, but not earlier. It is very important that your child is present to take this exam, which is combined with the FSA Reading to comprise their FSA ELA score. If either the Writing or Reading exam is missing, students will not receive an FSA ELA score. Please remember that 10th graders must score a 3, 4 or 5 on their FSA ELA to receive their high school diploma.

We are having issues with the lights at the football stadium. A company will start repairs next week, but we have been told it will probably take a week or two to complete the work. For next week, all home games using the football field have been rescheduled to start earlier. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Good News!!
THERE TRULY IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME - Girls Basketball
Post season is all about winning and advance. On Tuesday night in the 'DEN', the Lady Panthers did just that. Nease completed their second straight undefeated season in the friendly confines of the 'Panther Den'. The home winning streak now stands at twenty six, as the Lady Panthers sent the visiting Lady Purple Canes from Gainesville packing for the second year in a row. In the 'Sweet Sixteen' between familiar foes and a boisterous crowd, Nease would take control of the game in the second quarter (23-11) and was never threatened by hurricane force winds the rest of the way. The Lady Panthers, winners of 15 straight games, advanced to the 'Elite Eight' for the second consecutive year with the satisfying victory 71-45 over Gainesville, finishing their season at 22-8.
Both teams were deadlocked (12-12) after the first quarter. With starting forward Peyton Carter saddled with early foul trouble and the team looking for a spark or two, the call to the bench was made. Senior co-captain Hannah Campbell and freshman Stephanie Manherz answered the call to action. The two teamed up with Camille Hobby (6 pts.), Kiya Turner (6 pts., including a trey bank at the buzzer), and the super-charged energy on display by forward Mykah Eshbaugh, to quell the storm and pounce the opposition in the second quarter. Nease went into intermission with the double digit lead (35-23), as Camille scored 13 of her team high 17 points in the half.
Nease would extend the lead to 18 points and held the decisive advantage (54-36) entering the final eight minutes of regulation play. The Lady Panthers continued to display their depth, as junior forward Mary Thompson came off the bench to ignite the third quarter energy effort. Nease efforts to keep Gainesville off balance and uncomfortable through multiple defensive changes, proved to be very beneficial throughout the night. The frustration, wear and tear, began to take it's toll on the visitors in the second half, leading to their demise. With the white flag in place in the waning minutes of the game, the Lady Panthers emptied the bench for a final curtain call as the celebration began.
Nease (26-3), got double digit scoring from 3 of the 5 starters. Camille Hobby (13 pts./8 rebs./2 blks.), Kiya Turner (15 pts./5 assists/3 stls.), and the complete game produced by Mykah Eshbaugh (12 pts./12 rebs./5 assists/3 stls. and 3 blks.). The reserve efforts were also superb, as Hannah Campbell (7 pts./4 blks./3 stls.) and Stephanie Manherz (7 pts./4 rebs.), logged valuable minutes. With a highly enthused bench and loyal crowd support, the 'Panther Den' indeed proved to be a hostile environment for the visitors. No place like HOME!
The challenge now grows greater in the 'Elite Eight'. In order to make a deeper run in the playoffs and continue the pursuit of the ultimate prize (State Title), Nease will take the long trek to take on Choctawhatchee on Friday in the Regional Finals, aiming to return home with the Victory. Win and advance is the sweetest song I know. "Coming together is a beginning, working together is progress and staying together is success". Pounce and Bounce!!

Academy News
For the latest Nease Academy News, check out neaseacademies.com

If you are an Academy student, and want to drop your Academy for next year, you must fill out and turn in an Academy Drop form. Email Mrs. Combs at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us to request a form. We will not remove an Academy class from the student’s 2018-19 schedule until we’ve received the completed form, per district policy.

Upcoming Academy Field Trips:
  • Fleet Readiness Center Southeast – Stellar Academy of Engineering, Introduction to Engineering Design (March 8th)
  • Sawgrass Marriott – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (March 13th)
  • St. Augustine Amphitheater – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (March 19th)

Students will be able to get field trip forms from their Academy teachers two weeks before the trips take place.

A reminder that Academy students sign a contract at the beginning of each year stating that they will maintain certain academic and behavioral standards in order to remain in an Academy program. Academy students must maintain a total GPA of at least a 2.0, and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (75%) in an Academy class. A student in an Academy must also maintain a good discipline record.
In accordance with district policy, if a student does not meet these requirements, he/she will be placed on probation for a semester. If, at the end of that probation period, he/she does not have a GPA which meets the requirements, or fails to have an improved discipline record, the student will be removed from the Academy. If an Out of Zone student is removed from an Academy, he/she will be transferred back to his/her zoned school. Letters were mailed home and delivered to students in class in early February, to make students and parents aware of probationary status for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns about Nease’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Communications Academy, or the Stellar Academy of Engineering, please contact Jaime Combs, Academy Coordinator, at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Great Decisions, brought to us by World Affairs Council Jacksonville http://www.worldaffairscounciljax.org, is a non-partisan high school enrichment program on foreign affairs that fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
