Preservation Action Completes 2018 Congressional Candidate Survey

Preservation Action is pleased to announce that we have completed our 2018 Historic Preservation Congressional Candidate Survey. Over the last few months, with the help of our state and local partners, we reached out to U.S House and Senate candidates in all 50 states. With the 2018 midterm elections just around the corner, Preservation Action surveyed congressional candidates in an effort to keep Americans informed on where their candidates for office stand on the national historic preservation program, and to educate candidates on key historic preservation programs.

We received responses from nearly 150 congressional candidates, representing 37 states and the District of Columbia.  The results show historic preservation is a bipartisan issue and recognized as an important federal policy initiative by candidates from across the country.

99%  Support the Historic Preservation Fund

98%  Support the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit

96%  Support considering the impact of potential infrastructure legislation on historic resources

Midterm elections are less than a month away. Check out our website to learn more about our survey and to see how candidates in your state responded. In addition to reviewing the survey results, we encourage you to research where your members of Congress stand on historic preservation.  Check out these additional resources to learn more.  Remember to VOTE PRESERVATION Nov. 6th!

Senate Committee Schedules Hearing to Consider Nomination of David Vela to be National Park Service Director

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has scheduled a hearing for November 15, 2018 to consider the nomination of David Vela to be the next Director of the National Park Service (NPS). The hearing was originally scheduled for next week but was rescheduled as Senate leaders reached a deal allowing the Senate to recess early for the midterms. David Vela was nominated by President Trump last month and if confirmed would become 19th NPS Director. The National Park Service has been without a permanent director since January of 2017. Currently Deputy Director P. Daniel Smith is serving as acting director and will continue in that role until David Vela is confirmed by the Senate.

David Vela has been with the National Park Service for 28 years and  currently serves as the Superintendent of Grand Teton National Park. He started his career at the  San Antonio Missions Historical Park and has  worked in several positions in the National Park Service including Superintendent of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park, Regional Director of the NPS Southeast Region and in a senior position at the NPS headquarters in Washington, DC.
