On a September morning in 2001, the residents of a small town in Canada the size of Cheney, found themselves playing host to 38 international flights that were diverted and land expectantly at the little Gander, Newfoundland, airport when terrorist attacks in America caused US airspace to be closed. The townspeople gathered their resources and opened their homes to feed, clothe and comfort nearly 7,000 passengers for five days.
The play, “Come From Away”, tells their stories and how “their simple hospitality to the unexpected house guests drew worldwide accolades and even inspired a Broadway musical.” The smash hit and Tony Award winning musical, co-produced by Coeur d’Alene’s Laura Little, is now available in a once-in-a-lifetime package offered by the Hayden Chamber of Commerce along with Laura Little Productions.
Travelers will board two chartered tour buses the morning of Nov. 3, 2018 and travel to Seattle; enjoying culinary treats and refreshments along the way. Laura will join the riders and tell of her adventures, and a framed, cast and crew autographed poster from the show will be raffled.
After checking in at the fabulous Hotel Monaco, they will enjoy premiere seating while they attend a showing of the play at the 5th St. Theatre with more surprises after the show. The next morning will provide the guests with a few hours to do a little holiday shopping before returning to Coeur d’Alene.
Only 100 tickets are being sold- don't wait to get yours before they're all gone!
The City of Hayden has put forth a ballot measure that would allow the citizens to vote on whether or not to allow a higher increase in the property tax than the 3% that State Statute allows. The increased revenue from a successful base budget increase would be dedicated to road maintenance and law enforcement.

Jack Castle, Other Local Authors at Post Falls Library's Sound-Off Event

On Saturday, August 18, 1-2:30 p.m., local authors Jack Castle, Gary Edwards, Bonnie Gilbert, and Joyce Nowacki, will read from their works at the Community Library Network at Post Falls. Each will read from their works and, at the end of the readings, the public is invited to chat with the authors. Castle will be reading from his latest novel, Stranger Tides, due out August 10.

Nathan Hansen, program specialist, began the popular series, Local Author Sound-off, in late spring.  On a Saturday of every month, authors are invited in to share their works. “I invite authors of different genres to share their stories, so we can have a little bit of something for everyone each session.” With an audience of 15 to 20 in attendance, the selection of children’s literature, non-fiction, and fiction stories have hit the spot.

Hansen notes that with more than 700 authors in Kootenai County, the program has endless possibilities. “It’s such a pleasure to hear the works of these professional story crafters,’ Hansen notes. “We have story times for children all the time, why not have a big kids story time too?”
