Last week, a  group of children . . .

who have been attending baby, then preschool, story times since they were just wee tots, have one last hurrah at the library Tuesday morning before heading off to kindergarten. We'll miss seeing you at story time, but know you will be back to see us soon. Have a great time at school and keep reading!

Classics Book Discussion: The Idiot
by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Idiot  is considered one of Dostoevskty's greatest works, although not as popular as Crime and Punishment or the Brothers Karamazov. It is said to be his most autobiographical work --Dostoevsky, like his hero, was an epileptic. The book was written in 1867-69 while he was abroad after fleeing from his creditors in Russia.
The title is an ironic reference to the hero, Prince Myshkin, whose goodness and simplicity lead some people to think he is stupid. Myshkin is sort of a Russian Christ figure, who embodies the values Dostoevsky cherished - altruism, meekness, kindness and love.

Second Friday Book Group
The Glass Castle: A Memoir, by Jeannette Walls

From the Executive Director:

I am so excited about all the great book groups going on at the library. And I am even more excited to announce that I will lead our Second Friday Book Groups at the library. The group meets the second Friday of the month in the Reading Room for an informal, fun discussion of our book of the month. There is a rumor going around that I might make my famous homemade, blueberry lemon pound cake to share at our book group! Our next meeting will be on October 13th at 1:30 pm. We will discuss The  Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls. The book has just been made into a film, so it's a good time to get together and talk about it. Click here for more information on the  Glass Castle. Call or stop in at the library to request a copy. All are welcome at any of our library book groups. No pre-registration needed.

Book donations - On hold until 9/15
Everyone has been SO generous that
we are once again full-to-bursting!
Apparently this is the season to clean out the bookshelves! NWPL is quite thankful that you think to bring your book donations here. The funds we receive through our book sale helps support our daily operations. But right now we have more donations than we can process. Please hold your book donations until September 15. If you would like to clean out before then, the Bridgewater Thrift Store on the third floor of the Bridgewater Mill is a good place to take them.
NWPL Art Committee gifts
The shows curated by the NWPL Art Committee have become so popular, they are now booking into 2019 for solo shows, as well as our seasonal group shows.  In addition, our NWPL Art Committee is enriching the library community by adding to our collection. We now are able to offer passes to the Shelburne Museum and the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center AND subscriptions to Plein Air and Art New England!
Thank you NWPL Art Committee for all you do for the library and the community!
