Newsletter

As we welcome 2019, I wish you all much happiness and good health throughout the year.

While ringing in the New Year, many people make resolutions. Our New Year's goal at Christ the King Preschool/ Daycare is to focus on physical fitness.  Learning the basic elements of movement and exercise is the key to developing body awareness and confidence.  It encourages a sense of ease and promotes agility through sports, climbing in the playground, dancing and every day activities like running around.  We will work on three components of a healthy exercise program such as; strength, stretching and endurance.  We will achieve this through games and activities that are fun, silly and encourage adult-child interaction.  The children will also learn about good dental hygiene and habits, through various hands -on activities.

Drama Appreciation is this month.  Each class will act out one of their favorite story books or poems.  All throughout the month of January, the children will be learning about the season of Winter.  They will learn about winter appropriate clothing, and conduct science experiments with freezing and melting.

When looking back on December highlights, the children's perfo rmances at the Holiday Shows are at the top.  The true spirit of the holidays was captured with them singing their little hearts out, and acting out their dance routines.   All of the teachers and staff at Christ the King Preschool/Daycare would like to thank all of the families for their generosity throughout the Holiday Season.  It was very thoughtful of you and very much appreciated.

  • Just a reminder our Daycare Center is open from 7am - 7pm.

  • Please remember to make sure your child's cubby contains weather-appropriate clothing. We also appreciate all of our parents continuing to bring in diapers and a box of wipes twice each month on the 1st and the 15th.
  • When calling the facility, please keep in mind that calls should be ideally made between 12-2pm while the children are napping.
  • We ask that you do not allow your child(ren) to run ahead of you when entering and leaving the facility, it is a safety issue. Especially when exiting the building, children should never open the security door.
  • Strollers that are left in our storage area must be closed.
  • Weather Information/School Closing
Please check our website  www.ctkny.org for the latest in school closing information. If we should have to close due to inclement weather, you will also receive an email notification.
  • Mid-year Progress Reports will be distributed January 22nd - 25th.  Parents can schedule an individual appointment with their child's teacher either before their drop off time or before their pick up. You may also choose a phone conference scheduled during naptime.

We thank you for your cooperation with these matters.

Science with the Puppies
The Puppies are growing and learning so much every day. This month's theme was science.   Science is all about exploring the world that we live in.  It  can be seen in the simplest of things, like pushin g a button on a toy and seeing what happens. The children enjoyed a project where we made different colored ice cubes and shook it in a metal tray with paper to see what image would be created as the ice melted.   Puppy teachers would also stress the words "soft, hard, loud, quiet" etc.  This also helps with their language skills and they learn new words.   Good job Puppies!

Science with the Chipmunks
The Chipmunks love learning about science and doing experiments to explore and learn all that is around them.  One experiment we did was learning about solutions.  We made two different kinds of solutions using sugar, salt and water.   First, we asked what they thought a solution was and wrote it down and compared it later on to what they found out after the experiment was completed.   We filled two clear glasses with warm water.  Then into one glass, we put a spoonful of sugar and the other a spoonful of salt.  Next, we stirred the sugar water and salt water.  I asked the class what happened to the sugar and salt as their faces looked astonished.  They said that they disappeared.  I told them that was correct.  The sugar and salt dissolved into the water and it became a solution.  Then I asked the class if they wanted to taste the sugar and salt solutions and they all yelled, "Yes!"  Each child got two small plastic cups and into each one we poured a little of each solution.  As they tasted each one it was so funny watching the expressions on their faces.

When the children were all done, we made a chart and wrote down who liked or disliked each solution.  They really enjoyed doing this experiment.  It was hands on, they all participated in it, and they all got a chance to express which one they liked best.  Now the Chipmunks can tell you how to make a solution at home.

Science with the Turtles
Throughout the month of December, the Turtles spent time learning and discussing topics related to homes and the places that we live.  We learned a lot about science this month.  Not only did we learn about the different types of places we can live, but we also learned about where different animals can live. In our science center we have been looking into different animals and the different climates each animal can live in.  We created different in-class homes for the animals. For example, we made a cave, an ocean, and a log out of paint and other various art supplies.  We then made a game where we put the animals from our science center into their new homes.  The children all had so much fun!

Mathematicians

Math with the Bunnies
In December, the Bunnies had a lot of fun with math. Throughout our day, we try to incorporate counting with the kids in a variety of ways.  During circle time, we look at number flashcards.  We also ask the children to point to certain parts of their bodies.  For example, we will ask, "Where are your feet?" and the Bunnies will kick out their feet.  The teachers will say, "You have two feet!  One, two!"  At this point we are trying to encourage them to repeat and count along with us.  During snack, we will count the amount of cookies or goldfish they get in front of them.  In the gym or the playground, the Bunnies love to run, so we try to make it a race and say, "One, two, three, go!"  They always wait and then run as fast as they can.  Sometimes they imitate what the teachers say and start the race themselves.  Through these various activities, the children are hearing numbers throughout their day.

Math with the Lions
With all the fun and festivities going on in December, the Lions still made sure to focus on learning as usual.  Last month our focus was on math, and how do you incorporate math and the holidays, you make a super awesome paper Christmas tree.  We started by introducing size order to the children.  The teachers then cut triangle shapes in different sizes and gave each child a piece to color with a green crayon.  Next, we gave them stickers to decorate each piece.  We didn't tell the children what we were making and just asked them to color each piece and it would all come together in the end.  When the children were all done, we had them come over and try to put the pieces in size order like a puzzle.  After a lot of trial and error we finally finished the puzzle.  The children were so excited to find out that it was a Christmas tree!  For the rest of the day, anyone who came into the class was shown the tree and the children shared which piece they were responsible for.

Math with the Dolphins
During the Month of December, the Dolphins explored the theme of "Where We Live."  The Dolphins were also busy preparing for our Holiday Show and getting in the Holiday Spirit.  In the Math Center, students made AAB and ABB patterns using different colored houses.  The Dolphins also made Candy Patterns as we decorated our class Gingerbread House!  The Dolphins continued to practice patterning skills by making pipe cleaner and bead candy canes. In addition, the Dolphins practiced one to one correspondence by counting out how many marshmallows were in their hot cocoa cups and how many candy buttons were on different gingerbread people. Students counted how many people live in their homes and used people counters to represent each person.  Student also built upon their pre-math skills by beginning to work on addition with the book The Napping House. The Dolphins were very busy this month in the math center!

Art with the Snugglies II
The Snugglies 2 class had lots of fun with Art this month!   We used our handprints and footprints to get into the festive holiday season.   We used all different textures when creating our masterpieces.  Green paint was used for our "Mistletoes", homemade dough was used for our "Handprint Santas," and our hands were traced onto paper for our "Personal Christmas Tree."   Our decorations made the room Merry and Bright!   We hope you enjoyed all of our Holiday Masterpieces.

Art with the Sunflowers
Art is presented in your child's life every single day. The knowledge of colors, shapes, and hand-eye coordination helps your children make the beautiful projects and crafts that you see displayed in our classroom!  This past month, your children have been doing a lot of hands on crafts such as gluing, finger-painting, and coloring.  One fun project we did was to create a class Christmas Tree.  The children went into the paint room and used green paint to make the tree.  They then dipped their fingers in other colors to create ornaments on the tree.  When it was dry, we glued sequences.  We were all amazed with how beautiful it was.

Colors are also taught and displayed during our circle time activities and on the posters on our walls!  During circle time, Miss Linda and Miss Ashley ask the children what colors they see throughout the day, such as, "What color is the sun, the sky, etc.?"  Miss Linda and Miss Ashley ask the children to find and point out specific colors on our colors poster!  The knowledge of colors and hand-eye coordination, help children to create the beautiful art that we all love and enjoy!

Art with the Ducks
The month of December's unit topic was "Where We Live."  For art, students constructed houses with different shapes.  We read "Friendshape," by Amy Rosenthal.  Then students were given a triangle, square, circle, and a rectangle.  Students used the shapes to make a house.  Students had to identify the shapes before they added them to their picture.  Students were then given crayons and colored pencils to add details to their house.

As a class, we also read the book, "The Big Orange Splot," by Daniel Pinkwater.  This book was about a man named Mr. Plumbean and his unique house.  Students answered the focus question; "If you lived on Mr. Plumbean's street how would you paint your house?"  Students then drew what their dream house would look like.  Later in the month, we  read, "Iggy Peck Architect" by Andrea Beaty.  After listening to the story, students had to construct a house out of Popsicle sticks. Students observed blue prints and then used Popsicle sticks to make a house. Students glued Popsicle sticks onto paper and had to figure out how many Popsicle sticks they needed for their house.  Their houses all came out amazing!

Musicians in the Making

Music with the Kitties
Two very popular activities in the Kittie room are dancing and singing.  We had a lot of fun everyday practicing for the Holiday show!  Knowing how much the Kitties all love Elmo, Ms. Ami picked "Elmo's Christmas Wish!"  It was a big hit every time the teachers wanted to practice, because who wouldn't want to sing an Elmo song everyday!  Learning different moves and motions through music is always great fun.

We also have a music and movement CD in our classroom which the Kitties love to do!  Some songs have us standing and reaching for the sky, touching toes, hoping like frogs, and even turning around quickly.  Other songs are seated and ask the children to clap their hands 4 times, to slapping knees 3 times and continue down to 1.  Songs like this reinforce movement and numbers. Throughout the day, no less than 2 Kitties can be heard singing a song on their own, but, don't let them catch you trying to listen or they smile and stop!  Music is SO much fun in the Kitty room.

Music with the Monkeys
We are so excited 2019 has arrived.  During the month of December, the Monkeys had an interesting lesson in music.  One morning, during circle time Miss Diane was singing the ABC's with the class, however, Miss Diane wanted to see if we could sing the ABC's with a different beat.  Miss Sara and I gave each child a tambourine from our musical instruments and we sang the ABC's using the tambourine.  The children were able to experience what the ABC song sounded like with the tambourine and then we experimented with other instruments.  We found that each musical instrument makes music sound different.  We also discussed that the bells we had were the softest sounding and drums were the loudest.  Consequently, a loud and soft lesson formed from just dancing and using instruments.  The Monkey created a lesson out of hearing and observing.

Music with the Pandas
In the month of December, the Pandas learned all about homes. The children really enjoyed learning "The House Song," on YouTube. They learned all about different types of homes and how they are made. The Pandas also took items from the music center to sing and dance along to this song. In addition, as December began, the Pandas started practicing for the holiday show and listened to a lot of  Christmas music.  The children used the bells in the music center to shake to the rhythm and sing along to the song, "Jingle Bells." After all their hard work and practice, the children did a wonderful job at the Holiday show.

Gym time with the Bumblebees
This month the Bumblebees learned the concept of "first, second, and third."  We also learned about going "left and right."  To practice these terms, we did an activity in the gym.  Each child grabbed a car or bike of their choice.  Miss. Karolina would choose three children and use the terms first through third to announce when each child was allowed to go.  We also practiced turning the cars and bikes left and right.  Miss. Karolina would say let's go left, and the children would ride their vehicles to follow her.  In addition, we practiced the terms left and right when walking in the hallway.  The teachers would say, "Move to the left or right," instead of our usual "Walk on the numbers and letters."  These activities helped reinforce the new vocabulary terms as well as the concept of following directions.

Gym time with the Angels
The Angels really enjoy gym time and look forward to playing in the gym all morning long!  While in the gym, the Angels love to exercise!  Whether it is relay races, throwing and catching balls, riding bikes or even doing jumping jacks; the Angels always have a lot of fun while getting their bodies in motion.  The Angel class loves to count up to ten while doing the jumping jacks, and sometimes they even try to mimic their teachers and do other exercises such as sit-ups and push-ups as well!  The Angels always clap when they are finished and are eager to move on to the next activity, with one another, in the gym.

Tech time with the Bears
This month's theme, "Where We Live," was explored throughout all the centers in the classroom.  The students were able to engage in many multisensory activities.  During small group, the students explored with the Smartboard as we discussed and learned about different kinds of home, we all live in.  The children discussed the importance of having shelter around us.  Then they discussed how animals need homes as well.  Then children had to click and drag the correct animal to their home, such as the bird to the nest, a bear to a cave, a squirrel to a tree and so on.  The children also used the Smartboard to sort different things we find in a home, such as a bed in the bedroom, a couch in the living room, bathtub in the bathroom, etc.  When the children got the answer correct, they heard applause.  The children had a great time working with each other to get the correct answer.  This was a great activity for hand and eye coordination and the children all enjoyed participating in these activities.

Quotes
Angels
One morning while the Angels were getting ready to clean up the reading books, Sophia opened up a book held up both of her hands and said, "Ten more minutes please!"

Bumblebees
During free play one morning Ava announced out loud, "I'm playing with Christopher!"  In reply, Niles said, "Get out of town!"

Bears
The Bears had the opportunity to make mail boxes to go along with our theme, "Where We Live."  During center time, the children would write letters to their friends and move throughout the room to deliver their mail.  One day Antonio and the boys were near their mailboxes and talking quietly. Miss Kerin went over to the boys and asked them what they were talking about.  Antonio said, "Ms. Kerin I can't tell you it's a secret."  Miss Kerin said to them, "I love secrets," and Antonio said, "Well okay we are making mail for the girls but we don't want them to see us put it in their mailboxes."  Miss Kerin said, "Ohhhh! I have an idea.  When we all line up to wash our hands for lunch the boys can stay behind and put your notes in the girls' boxes."  The boys all got excited delivering their mail and when the girls got back from the bathroom they said to the girls, "You got mail!"

Chipmunks
During circle time one afternoon, we asked what the children wanted Santa to bring them for Christmas. The class took taking turns telling all of us what they wanted.  After everyone had their turn Christopher said, "What does Miss. Doreen and Miss. Nancy want?"  Before we could answer Tori said, "They want make-up!"
