Sanborn Seminary Trustees Awards $30,000 to SRHS Classroom Teachers
Each year, the Sanborn Seminary Trustees provide funds for Sanborn Regional High School teachers to support innovative, student-centered classroom experiences for students. At a meeting this summer, the Trustees met with Principal Brian M. Stack and approved nearly $30,000 in classroom grant proposals submitted by various teachers.

Here is a summary of what was approved:

Service Learning Project for At-Risk Students: Submitted by teachers Kathy Giovando, Amanda Bradley, and Josh White: $5,000.00 as a budget to allow the students in the Home Base Program to put on a monthly breakfast for community organizations / retirement communities.

An Update From the School Counseling Office
As one can expect it has been very busy in the counseling office to start the year. Schedule changes are now complete and the students seem to be settling into their classes.

The counseling office year starts off with our Annual College Fair on September 12. We have over 70 colleges scheduled to attend. The admissions representatives start their morning at the high school with a presentation by Principal Stack who discusses Sanborn’s grading system and competency based education. All of the counselors also take this time to meet with the admissions representatives. All grades have an opportunity to visit the college fair and the students will have all participated in advisory activities which help to prepare them to attend the college fair.  Please take a minute to look over the list of colleges that will be attending to help your student use their time at the fair effectively.

On September 17th we kick off the Senior College Application season with a senior parents night in the library at 6:00pm. We will discuss the application timeline, letters of recommendation, Naviance and the Common Application. On September 18th, Seniors will receive the same information during a Senior Post-Secondary Kickoff.

Are you wondering how you will pay for college? On October 4th at 6:00pm, NHHEAF (NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation) will give a presentation to explain the FAFSA (Federal Application for Federal Student Aid), how to apply, what exactly is an EFC (Expected Family Contribution and how to find free money (grants and scholarships).

Finally, we will be meeting with all of our Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors to do pre-administration paperwork for the PSAT/NMSQT (grades 10 and 11) and the PSAT 8/9 (grade 9). All students will take the exams on October 10th here at school. This is a great opportunity for students to get a sense of what the actual SAT is like and there is no cost for the students to participate.

As always, counselors continue to meet with all students to support them emotionally, academically and socially. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s counselor.

SRHS TO Host College Fair
The counseling office will host a college fair on September 12, during the school day. All grades will have an opportunity to attend the fair and visit the 50+ institutions that will be in attendance. Please contact the guidance office at (603) 642-3600 for more information.

NHS Students to Offer Community Service
Have you participated in our annual Senior Day of Caring in recent years? This year we are revamping the event. Instead of one day, we will have multiple opportunities for you to receive community service from our students.

Are you in need of a small group of students to help ready your surroundings for the winter? The National Honor Society is looking to offer their time and effort to local individuals, groups, and organizations to provide community service. Jobs can include light yard work (raking, stacking wood, garden cleanup, etc), organizing, office work, and other similar tasks. Please contact Ms. Richardson ( erichardson@sau17.net) by email, or please call the school at (603) 642-3341 before September 21, 2018. This way, we can figure out a time to visit (it will not be during school hours) and help out our community members. We will work to accommodate as many requests as possible.
Suicide Prevention: Sponsored by Austin17 House
Dear Sanborn Families,

As many of you already know, we have lost several wonderful people in our community to suicide over the past few years. Too many who young people with bright futures, lost their battle with demons and ended their pain in suicide. For those left behind, loads of questions, what ifs, and sadness no family or friend should have to bear. Thankfully we live in a remarkable community with people who are willing to help one another in times of need. Austin17House consists of some of those people.

Austin17House (AH) has been working diligently to not only provide a safe place for kids to hang out and be themselves but a place of belonging and empowerment.

Thanks to community support, the youth's involvement and partnerships they've created along the way AH been able to provide educational awareness surrounding teen empowerment, suicide prevention, substance use disorders, leadership training and more.

As school is starting, the transition can be hard; we want to give youth and our young adults the opportunity to learn self-care and resiliency as they head into a new year.

In partnership with the Seacoast Public Health Network, Austin17House will be hosting teen resiliency classes for high-school students, workforce resiliency for adults and suicide prevention classes for 18-25-year-olds, faculty, staff, and parents.

We are looking for three dates to host these training in September. Training varies from 1-3 hours long and is all evidence-based. A parent training is scheduled for Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 PM Austin17House is located at 263 Route 125 in Brentwood, NH. We are looking for parents, teachers, counselors, etc. to come and learn more about the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, as well as learn how you can make a difference. Please join me at this training so that we can make a difference in our community.

Please contact Director Lindsey Messina at 603-418-5864 or Maria Reyes at mreyes@seacoastphn.org to sign up or for more information.

Warmly,

Paula J. Pelletier

An Important Message From School Administrators:
PTO Clothing Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
