Principal's Message

We have been tracking student progress through the NWEA MAP assessment. We are excited to share that we are seeing growth at every grade level from where we were a year ago! Our teachers are working hard to ensure your students are growing by working to meet each student's individual needs while hitting the rigor of the grade level standards. We have three months left this school year and we look forward to watching your children reach their next set of instructional goals!

Spring parent teacher conferences are almost here. Please be sure to schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher.

Thanks for checking out our newsletter and remember you can follow us on twitter @glendeningelem and check out our website at  gocruisers.org/glendeningelementary_home.aspx

Welcome Mrs. Gilpen

Mrs. Laticia Gilpen has been a part of the Glendening family for a while but now she is entering a new position as the building secretary. We are thrilled to have her as both a Glendening parent and a full time staff member!

"I am beyond excited to be the new Glendening Secretary. I am a mother of three to Gavin, Blake, and Breelyn and happily married to my husband Jeremy. I'm a proud graduate of Groveport Madison who also attended Glendening when I was in elementary school. This is my home away from home and I enjoy working with the staff and students. I can't wait to see what the rest of year brings."

Right to Read Week

February 12th through the 16th Glendening celebrated Right to Read week. The week started with a Schoolhouse Meeting to discuss the value of reading and reaching reading goals. Kody Kasey joined us to share his inspiring story and how a positive attitude and his education helped him get back up from a life changing event. The theme this year was Read for the Gold. Throughout the week students participated in reading activities that included; stop drop and read, reading training camp, and the reading awards. The Reader's Oath was said on the announcements each morning.  At the end of the week students were given metals for meeting their reading goals.

Reader's Oath

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.

I'll read to myself
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.

I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school.
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.

Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.

So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.

100th Day Celebration

The Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes celebrated their 100th day of school! The students dressed as if they were 100 years old and completed learning tasks that incorporated the number 100.

Book Suggestions

A number of new books have hit our shelf in the Glendening teacher library. We are using these books in the classroom to build character. Here is the list of books organized by theme so you can read them with your child. Don't forget, all students at Glendening were issued a library card this school year. The Columbus Metropolitan Library is a great resource to help place these books in your child's hands.

My School Color Run

The Glendening Student Council will host the inaugural community wide My School Color Run on Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 am to raise money for school improvement and field trips. This is an untimed 5K fun run for all ages and fitness abilities. Along the route, participants pass through vibrant color zones, making it a "colorful experience". Additionally, each pre-registered participant will receive a single powder color packet that will be thrown in the air at the final color celebration at the finish line.

"Rather than sell goods, we want to engage the entire student body in a fitness initiative that aims to encourage a life-long healthy way of living", says Nicole Mays. Participants that register by Saturday, April 14th will receive a t-shirt, race bib, and individual color packet.

You can sign up for the run by visiting  https://events.myschoolcolorrun.com/   and searching for your event or by completing a paper registration form.

Business sponsorship opportunities are also available.

For more information contact the event organizer, Nicole Mays at (614) 836-4972

A special thank you to Nicole Mays, Megan Horan, and the Glendening Student Council!

Counselor's Corner

Please welcome Jennifer Marshall. Ms. Marshall will be joining us at Glendening on Wednesdays.

Dear Parents and Staff,

My name is Jennifer Marshall and I am a graduate student at Capital University studying School Counseling. I am pleased to announce that I am completing my School Counseling Practicum with Groveport-Madison Schools. This January through April, I will be spending two days a week at Groveport and Glendenning Elementary Schools. I am under the supervision of the current school counselor for these schools, Ms. Kari Winhoven. I will be assisting Ms. Winhoven in individual and group counseling as well as with classroom guidance lessons.

I am excited to bring my educational and professional experiences to the schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. I have also spent the last eight years in various mental health positions working with children and adults. I currently do case management and behavioral interventions for a local children's nonprofit agency. Please contact Ms. Winhoven with any questions are concerns.

Kindly,

Ms. Jennifer Marshall

Growth Mindset Quote

"Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it."

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
