The 2019 Baseball season park effects are now available for ordering.  Next Tuesday, the 19th, we will be switching the golf game over to the 2019 President's Cup card set.  The 2018 ACC football card set will also be available early next week.

 

Then there was one!  One team with a zero in either the W or L column.  Yes Cincinnati I'm talking to you.

 

Last week, I went out of town and visited my parents, who are 88 and 91 years young.  I use Facebook to keep in touch with our children and grand children. I don't use Facebook for business.  But I learned something about Facebook last week.   

 

Someone posted on Facebook with my name in his comments. So every time someone commented I got another notification.  That would have been ok but the person who started it all claimed he and I were good friends and he had influence with me.  I've talked to this man a couple of times but I've never met him in person.The statements were not accurate. The reason I mentioned this is because the 2019 baseball product season will soon be here.  This is what happens every year.  Someone posts somewhere that he has order number XXXXXX and has gotten his order.  We then can get deluged with emails etc from customers with lower order numbers complaining that they have not gotten their orders yet.  The first guy is "busting your chops".  He does not have his product. He enjoys getting a reaction out of folks. 

 

The other story is: I ordered the same day as the other guys in my league. They all have their cards and I don't.  Send my order out right away.  What really happened is the one guy did NOT order at the same time as everyone else.   

 

Do not believe everything that is posted on social media.  

 

Another issue that keeps coming up is: When is the next APBA sale?  As I've said previously we don't do sales. Black Friday, warehouse or any other kind.  Some will say wait for the warehouse sale.  I have 1/10th the warehouse space in Alpharetta that I had in Lancaster.  We now offer more than 100 baseball seasons compared to 31 when we left Lancaster.  Yet we do not need to sell product in a sale to clear warehouse space.  Someone will tell you that there is going to be an APBA warehouse sale, its not going to happen.  The prices are the prices.  You don't have to worry about buying a card set early that there will be a subsequent sale.  There will be no subsequent sale.  This is a matter of fairness to customers.

REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS

 

Florida's RollAPBAlooza 2019

 

It was a small group of APBAitites who braved the 100 Loss Team Tournament. Unfortunately, two players who had singed up were unable to make the trip to Central Florida. The success of the tournament is that 30% of the players were first time Florida Tournament players.

 

Everybody had a fun time trying to navigate their 100 loss team to victories. Like that piece of crap that just keeps floating to the top refusing to be flushed down, four mangers guided their teams into the playoffs (now that's an analogy I haven't heard before). Leading the way was first time tournament player, John Stubblefield, who rolled his way to a 7-2 record with the 2008 Seattle Mariners. A century before the 08 Mariners, the 1908 Brooklyn Supras, led by tournament veteran, Peter Wiske remained on the 08 Mariners tail with a 6-3 record. Rounding out the playoffs were the pre-tournament favorite, the 1930 Philadelphia Phillies managed by Steve Greenberg and the 1982 Cincinnati Reds rolled by Dan Oliveria.

 

The One-and-Done first round games were taken by the 08 teams to set-up a best of 3 games final between the 2008 Seattle Mariners and the 1908 Brooklyn Supras. Only two games would be needed, with the Mariners and John Stubblefield prevailing in the 14th inning of game two with a winning score of 4-3.

 

There were a total of 11 participants having fun for the day, but all were remembering those stricken with ALS. Together the participants raised $200 for ALS, which I consider to be an impressive amount for a small group, many of whom are retirees. A special thanks goes to Tony Stevens for coordinating and directing another successful Florida tournament.

 

In closing, Tony announced The Florida Last Man Standing Tournament to be held on Saturday March 14, 2020 in Mount Dora, Florida. See details in the tournament schedule section of this newsletter.

 

 

The Inaugural Bath City APBA Baseball Tournament

 

The Inaugural Bath City APBA Baseball Tournament was attended by 18 participants which were separated into a National and an American Division. Following the conclusion of pool play, the teams advancing to the playoffs and their managers were as follows:

 

1930 St. Louis Cardinals - NL Division Winner (John Roels)

1930 New York Giants - NL Division Wild Card (Christian Smith)

1931 Philadelphia Athletics - NL Division Wild Card (Mike Hernandez)

 

1990 Oakland Athletics - AL Division Winner (Ed Trojanowski)

2005 Houston Astros - AL Division Wild Card (Dave McCurdy)

1930 Washington Senators - AL Division Wild Card (Jeremy Smith)

 

The 2005 Houston Astros and 1930 New York Giants advanced winning their Wild Card Series. Both Leagues Championship Series went three games with the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals advancing in the National League and the 1990 Oakland Athletics in the American League.

 

So the World Series was set, pitting the the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals managed by John Roels against the 1990 Oakland Athletics managed by Ed Trojanowski. St. Louis won the opening game 6-2 but Oakland rebounded winning the second game of the series by a 7-6 score. In the final game St. Louis doubled up the Oakland club 4-2 to take the series. Congratulations to John Roels and his 1930 St. Louis Cardinals on their tournament championship. Many thanks to Stray Corrado on organizing and directing another successful and well-attended tournament. The tournament participants also collected and donated $81 to ALS inn the name of Randy Walker. A special thanks for all who contributed. The Veteran's Memorial Tournament

 

At the inaugural Veteran's Day APBA Baseball Tournament in Leesburg, Virginia, twenty (20) teams in five divisions faced off.  Teams were selected from the Cold War, 1946-1991, then adding a military veteran from the franchise.  This event was in honor of Captain John Scalzo, a Navy veteran that served his country well. 

  

Even though it was a cold day outside, 13-year-old Tyler Wyks' dice were hot and he managed the 1953 Dodgers and military veteran 1918 Grimes to a championship.  He defeated the 1979 Pirates with 1964 Clemente managed by Walt Shinsky.  

 

Notable Veteran added to a team was Captain Eddie Grant (Ed Reiner), he died in WWI trying to save the lost Division by an artillery shell.  The best player was Hank Greenberg (Jim Saska), he had 11 home runs in 10 games.  Ford (John Scalzo) and Grimes (Tyler Wyks) both pitched no hitters during the day.  $125 was donated and will be donated to the Disabled American Veterans.  Thanks to everyone that made the inaugural event a success. Also congratulations to Rob and Amy Wyks on coordinating and conducting a successful inaugural event. And a special thank you to Captain John Scalzo, a Navy veteran, on this Veteran's Day Weekend.   And finally, a heartfelt thank you to all veterans for their service and sacrifice in the preservation of the freedoms we enjoy each and every day in this great country.

Saturday February 22, 2020 - The 2020 APBA Scenic City Shootout will be held in the Hamilton Room of the Embassy Suites by Hilton located at 2321 Lifestyle Way Chattanooga TN 37421.  The cost will be $20 with the event scheduled to start at 8am.  The tournament theme is The Expansion Era 1961-Present with teams having a Winning Percentage between .475 - .525.  Team selection will begin on November 30, 2019 at Noon.  The rules will be similar to the 2019 Shootout.  APBA Hall of Famer Charlie Fouche was the Inaugural Scenic City Shootout Champion.  Email Mike Kehrer ( [email protected]) or Steve Ryan ( [email protected]) with any questions or to register.

 

Saturday March 7, 2020 - The 6th Annual Greater Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament at The Loomis Park Baptist Church, 2301 North Elm Road, Jackson, Michigan 49201. There is a $20 Entry Fee ($10 Cancellation Fee if you cancel after August 16, 2019).  The tournament theme is any MLB team from 1901-2018 with winning % of less than .600 %.  This tournament still has room for participation (capping at 72) and plenty of good teams remain available.  Please contact Pastor Rich Zawadzki at  [email protected] if interested in attending or with your team selection by December 31, 2019.

 

UPDATED INFORMATION - Saturday March 14, 2020 - FLORIDA'S LAST TEAM STANDING TOURNAMENT; this will be a new, unique, and fun type of tournament in a format not previously offered. Prizes and tournament cost are to be determined.

 

NEW TOURNAMENT LISTING - Sunday March 15, 2020 - The Inaugural Rocky Mountain APBA Baseball Tournament will take place in Boulder, Colorado at a location to be announced. For this year, teams will be selected from the 1993 season (birth year of the Rockies) until present. No designated hitter will be used when an NL team plays at home. Saturday March 21, 2020 - The 2nd Annual Far West APBA Baseball Tournament.  The tournament is open to any team from 1908 to present PROVIDED that 154 or more games were played in that season.  Last year's champion 1930 Philadelphia A's may not be used.  The tournament play is the basic game using the advanced fielding option.  Boards and dice will be provided, bring your lucky dice tower or shaker (They have APBA shakers available). Saturday March 28, 2019 - The 3rd Annual Heartland Apba Tournament is scheduled for Saturday March 28, 2020 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  The tournament the is any team with a .500 record or worse.  The DH will be used.  You can give Earle your team when you commit.  Three-man rotations will be used and starters must go a minimum of 5 innings unless yielding 5 runs.  Relieve pitchers can pitch one inning each game.  The cost to participate is a $10 entry fee.  Trophy and APBA. gift card to the winner!  Hope to see you there!  For more info contact Earle Shamblin at  [email protected]

POTENTIAL TOURNAMENT IN SEATTLE AREA  -  There is an effort underway to conduct an APBA Baseball Tournament in the Seattle, Washington area.  If interested, please contact Dave Bednarek at  [email protected] with you name, contact information, and a preference for a Spring or Fall tournament.

 

UPDATE ON HOUSTON AREA TOURNAMENT - The tournament director has now met the minimum number of potential players showing an interest in playing in a tournament in 2020.  So, he is moving forward with setting the dates and venue.  In the meantime, they are still open to people who would like to participate.  If you are interested, please contact Ed Hubbard at  [email protected], and provide your name, email address and phone number.  As of now (based on stated preferences of those who provided them), they are looking at venues for weekends in May and August for the tournament.  The tournament will be held at a venue in the Clear Lake area of Houston, near the Johnson Space Center (close to Hobby Airport and about equal distance between downtown Houston and Galveston Island).  As soon as they have the venue and dates, we will update the newsletter with the hotel information and entrance fee details (to cover the cost of trophies, the common facilities and any common meals).  As stated before, they are planning an open tournament to any teams from 1946-72, with no DH, and 25-man rosters--otherwise, they plan to follow the APBA Annual Convention tournament rules (see:   http://apbagames.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/APBA-2019-TOURNAMENT-RULES.pdf).

November 10th Opening

 

MDTL League Opening - The MDTL is finishing it's 47th season. They have one manager that is retiring at the end of the season and are looking for a replacement manager to take over the ownership of this very successful franchise. Players on the team include Mondesi, Muncy, Soto, Benintendi, and Ohtani. The league is a 20 team league with 25 man rosters. They use the basic boards with a few modifications. They also use the basic pitching grades. This is a very solid league with a competitive but friendly membership. November 3rd Opening

 

UAL League Opening - The UAL needs a manager.  The UAL is 6 month winter league and are one month in.  They had a resignation from a playoff ready team.  They are a 24 team basic game league that uses a salary cap.  Mail league and they roll the dice, or not, and play a 160 game schedule October through March.  The available team has 43 A starts, 77 B starts, and 43  C starts  (290 innings of A* and 129 B*).  Eddie Rosario, Brantly, Andujar (NYY), Kepler, Jose Ramirez, and Story are some of the every day players.   Only drawback to this team is most of next years draft picks were traded to make this years team a contender.  The UAL CONSTITUTION is attached.   Here is the google docs page for the UAL league.  Hutcheson is the team without a manager.      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-6uARoqRDaFcjo0DW5841YHS7WX7AB6lpd93yFq3E_Y/edit#gid=96610676

October 27th Openings

All American Baseball Association (AABA) Opening -  The AABA is a hybrid card/dice and computer league started in 1983 and has an opening for a manager to take over a franchise.  The league is a 20 team draft league with a 162 game season April through October.  Three home/away series per month.  Basic game with upgrades including MG pitching grades and a few others.  The computer managers play BBW in manual mode.  Realistic pitching and use of hitter limits are applied.  The league draft is a live in person or by phone hookup in February.  They usually have 10 to 12 managers attending the draft for the weekend, with the others participate up by teleconference.  The available franchise features Bryce Harper, Gleber Torres, Joey Gallo, and excellent draft picks for the coming year.  If interested to learn more about the AABA opening, contact the league commissioner at [email protected].  Great group of managers, with three of them still around since 1983.  Many of their other managers have been in the league for 20 years or more.

 

October 20th Openings

 

Down Under Baseball League Opening - The DUBL, a draft mail league consisting of 28 teams, seeks a new manager for at least one of its existing franchises.  We use the basic game with several modifications and will begin our 43rd season next year.  The DUBL was featured on John Asalon's "This Week in APBA" radio show on June 30, 2019 and features an annual Convention in late June and an annual draft in January.  Each team plays 165 regular season games in a schedule played from May through October.  Twelve teams qualify for the playoffs each season.  Each team can carry 8 uncarded players as part of its 42-man roster.  For more information contact Monte at  [email protected].

 

TABL opening - The APBA Baseball League formed in 1969.  We play using both the Master Game and the computer game - your choice.  20 teams, continuous ownership.  84-game regular season, plus an 8-team playoff structure.  42-man rosters.  Realistic play is emphasized.  The annual rookie draft is coming up this December  -- this is a good time to join. The team available is in rebuilding mode, with good draft picks and a good nucleus already (Syndergaard, Stroman, Martinez, Chapman, Tucker, Adames...)   Strong stable membership across the continent, from New Hampshire to California, Quebec to Texas.  Contact Big Al at  [email protected] if you are interested.

 

September 22nd Openings

21st Century League Opening - The 21st Century APBA BBW Baseball League is now open and recruiting owners.  This is a 2 Division (American / National), 2 Conference (East / West) per Division and 5 team per Conference (20 teams' total) league.  They play a 150 game season with an All Star break and DH and non DH Divisions.  The league utilizes Micromanagers for away or home games.  The League rosters consist of 26 active players and 40 total players. September 1st Opening

 

AABL League Opening - The AABL, a 16 team basic game (with modifications) mail league in its 16th year, is looking to replace a manager who had to resign suddenly for personal reasons.  The open team has some nice buiding blocks like Josh Bell, Charlie Blackmon, and Mike Moustakas...but could use some help on the pitching staff.  With the current season almost over (ends in September) it is likely that the new manager won't have to do anything except play with the roster heading into the winter and the 2020 draft.  If interested please contact Andy at  [email protected].

 

August 18th Opening

 

OAPBA (Orlando APBA Assn) Opening - The OAPBA is seeking one or two new managers to expand the five-team league in 2020.  The league ( www.oapba.org) has been in existence since 1988 and is one of the longest-running leagues in the U.S.  It's face-to-face, Master Game, with some minor adjustments.  Thirty-three (33) player rosters with a pool of 30 players active and a three-play "farm system" (inactive, basically a futures list).  Detailed records for the entire lifetime of the league.  One needs to be knowledgeable about MLB and baseball strategy and APBA.  Contact Rod Caborn at  [email protected] or Dave Larson at [email protected] if interested.

 

August 11th Opening

 

Central New Jersey League Opening -  The 16 team face to face APBA league is based in the Philadelphia/South and Central New Jersey area and has been in existence for over 40 years.  This is a face to face league although league play using Computer rolling is also permissible.  The league plays a 162 game schedule and begins when the cards come out and ends the regular season by October 15th.  Anyone interested please contact Ed Dress at  [email protected]

 

August 4th Openings

 

ART League Opening - ART ( Almost the Real Thing League) is a 24-team BBW computer league looking for 3 (Brahmins, Compromise and Winos) dedicated managers.  The league follows the majority of MLB rules.  Each roster has 40 man ML and MI rosters.  Players follow option rules, teams work within budget guidelines ( based on wins), drafts for International FA, "First Year" draft, Rule V, and Free Agency.  The league has been in existence for 15+ years and all three franchise are either currently competitive or built for success long term.  If you are looking for a year round commitment with a fun group, you will enjoy what this league has to offer and they would love to have you join them.  If interested, contact Lanny at " [email protected]".

TSL League Opening - The TSL has a great opportunity for a new manager.  They are a 12-team draft league, currently at the halfway point of their 2019 season.  They are a cards and dice league, playing the basic game with only the most commonly used modifications (things like the optional fielding rules).  Don't miss this chance to join a league with 40+ years of history!  If interested, please contact Dan Spangler at  [email protected].

APBA Science Press Plus (S.P.P.) League Opening - The APBA S.P.P. League has an upcoming managerial openings. They are based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and have existed over 40 years.  The league is looking to add at least two new teams for the upcoming season. This is a face to face league although league play using Skype is also permissible.  The league plays a 160 game schedule and begins when the cards come out and ends the regular season by Oct. 15th.  Anyone interested please contact John at  [email protected].
