| Happy February! There are two more weeks of winter term left, and we have been keeping busy matching tutors and students. We now have 60 tutoring pairs at the center, a new record! Our ESOL students are focusing on health-related topics this term, such as areas of a hospital, stress, pain, exercise, medical conditions, and speaking with a doctor. For example, the ESOL 1 class has been learning about parts of the body and making a doctor's appointment, and ESOL 4/5 students have been exploring medical vocabulary, health questionnaires, and health-related pamphlets. We also hosted a health fair at the center on January 31, with representatives from Neighborcare Health, North Helpline, King County Public Health, the American Lung Association, and North Seattle Family Center there to connect interested students to various community resources.
As a reminder, classes will take a week-long break on the week of March 12 while we register new students for spring term, but tutoring will still take place during this time. We already have 45 people signed up for our next New Student Registration on March 12 & 14!

We have been busy with many trainings these past two months! Thanks to all of you who have attended our foundational trainings: WALDE, Literacy Foundations, Tutor Orientation, Citizenship Toolkit, and Teaching ESOL Adults. We are happy with the positive feedback we've been receiving from this new training!

This is our largest fundraising event of the year and features several students sharing their inspiring personal stories, as well as superstar author and librarian Nancy Pearl giving an entertaining rundown of her current favorite books. The Literacy Source library is a great resource for both volunteers and students! We have a wide range of books available for check-out to assist everyone in their learning. For a full list of topics, check out our library classification guide, which is also located to the left of the longest bookshelf. We thought we'd review our library system so that you all can take full advantage of this resource. For a printable guide on using the library, click here.
How the library is organized
Each category of the library is assigned a letter, and the shelves are labeled with these letters and categories. The spine label on each book indicates its assigned letter category. Most books within each category are organized alphabetically by title, with the exception being the Family Picture Books and Social Justice sections, which are not alphabetized. Student reading books (located to the left of the kitchen) are separated by ESOL/ABE level and alphabetized by title within each level. ESOL/ABE levels are also labeled on the shelves to make for easier browsing.
Checking out a book
To check out a book, scan the inside barcode at the check-out kiosk in the sun room, enter your email, and type the shared password, literacy. Books can be checked out for up to 3 weeks. Teachers and tutors can check out books for an entire term by sending an email to [email protected] and asking to extend the due date. If you'd like to renew a book, you can also do so via email by requesting a renewal, and one of our wonderful library volunteers will respond in a few days. To return a book, simply set it on the table with the green sign, to the left of the check-out kiosk.

| Tutor Self-Evaluation Form |
Starting in March, we will highlight one of the best practices listed on our tutor self-evaluation form, located on our Google Drive. We hope volunteers can revisit this form on an ongoing basis and that it is a useful tool to help you reflect on the work you are doing with your student.

Student Assessment Proctors
2-5 hr shifts every 7-10 weeks, daytime and evenings
Sight Words and Phonics Testers
Evenings, 1-3 hours, 2x/term
Computer Skills Workshop Tutors (One-time opportunity)
Thanks to a generous donation from the City of Seattle, some of our students are receiving refurbished laptops. Volunteers will help students get familiar with their new devices. Basic computer skills and Windows experience required. Please let Ruby know if you can help on either of these dates:
