Norman Rockwell Museum is showing Cultural Traditions: A Holiday Celebration through February 10, 2019. This exhibition uses the art and stories in children's picture books to explore the similarities and differences of holiday traditions throughout the world. Cultural Traditions features over 40 original illustration works of art by six award-winning children's book illustrators. The colorful images brilliantly show the customs and traditions celebrated during Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and the Chinese New Year. Spruce Peak Arts has two events happening this week. The film Face of Winter will be shown Thursday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m., and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony⎻Green Mountain Mahler Festival Annual Holiday Concert will be shown on December 29 at 7:00 p.m. Presented by Volkswagen, Face of Winter is a ski film by Warren Miller Entertainment showcasing the art and magic of skiing. This is the 69th installment from Warren Miller Entertainment, and this year the film honors the late Warren Miller, who passed away earlier this year. In Face of Winter, both new and veteran world-class athletes ski in some of Miller's favorite locations, enjoying the thrills the sport has to offer and paying tribute to the man who started it all. Tickets can be purchased here. On December 29 the Green Mountain Mahler Festival orchestra and chorus, led by conductor Daniel Bruce with four Vermont vocal soloists, will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "the Choral", one of Beethoven's most celebrated symphonies. Green Mountain Mahler Festival was founded in 2002 to provide Vermont musicians and music enthusiasts the chance to play and experience the music of the great Romantic composers. The concert will be performed on December 29 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here. Franklin Street Works is showing False Flag: The Space Between Paranoia and Reason through January 6, 2019. Throughout the year Franklin Street Works brings exhibitions to explore contemporary art and curatorial practices today and often aim to prompt discussions about issues surrounding art and social systems. The current exhibition title, False Flag: The Space Between Paranoia and Reason, refers to "false flags," or situations where a segment of the population accuses the government of staging a traumatic event in order to push an agenda. With videos, sculptures, paintings and photographs the exhibiting artists allow the viewer to formulate their own view of the contemporary and vast subject matter of paranoia, philosophical position, and psychological state. As exhibition curator Jeff Ostergren, New Haven based artist says, "Paranoia can be seen as both a cause and a symptom of our current anxiety, manifested through competing narratives in the political, social, and environmental." The exhibiting artists are Darja Bajagić, James Benning, Theodore Darst, Violet Dennison, Michael Green, Mark Flood, Juliana Huxtable, Harry Dodge and Stanya Kahn, Daniel Keller, Son Kit, Tim Trantenroth, and Melvin Way.
