FEATURED EVENT: Grand Opening of Ground Up Coffee Shop
HSD is pleased to announce the launch of our first community-based Marketing Lab experience for high school students: a coffee shop in First Tech's new Hillsboro Corporate Office, located across the street from the District's administration center. Cleverly named "Ground Up" by the student baristas, the coffee shop, which celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday, Sep. 5, will allow students to earn class credit during the school year and to receive pay for the hours they work on non-school days. EVENTS
Tuesday, Sep. 11, is the National Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day, we are encouraged to engage in community service, remember the victims of 9/11, and pay tribute not only to those who rose up in service in response to the attacks, but also to those who protect and serve our communities each day.

8.5 Summer Bridge Program
This summer, sixty incoming 9th graders from each of our middle schools participated in an 8.5 Bridge Program at their new high school. This four-day program focused on skill development, math, and career and college readiness. Students who attended earned a 0.25 elective credit. See photos here.

Youth Connect Summer Camps
For the second year, HSD partnered with the Hillsboro Police Department and Hillsboro Parks and Recreation to hold Youth Connect summer camps for incoming 8th grade students. At the week-long camps, students participated in hands-on activities, such as graphic t-shirt printing and police officer and firefighter training; listened to guest speakers who shared positive messaging to get them thinking about their futures; and engaged in fun activities like laser tag, river rafting, Zumba and yoga.

Vision Screenings Begin 9/20
Starting on Sep. 20, the District will conduct vision screenings for students in grades K,1,3 and 5 in partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. The annual vision screening meets the requirements of Oregon House Bill 3000. For more information, please contact your school's office manager or call the District's Vision Screening Team at 503-844-1553.

Community Public Safety Academy
The Washington County Sheriff's Department is currently accepting applications for its Community Public Safety Academy. The Academy provides a unique opportunity to learn more about law enforcement and how officers work to keep our communities safe. Participants complete thirty hours of training over six sessions between Oct. 17 and Nov. 14. Application deadline is Sep. 14.

HAPPENING IN HILLSBORO

September is National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month - a time where we can prepare ourselves in advance for disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, and tornados. Make and practice a plan for how you and your family would deal with a disaster, learn lifesaving skills, check your insurance policies and coverages, and save for an emergency. Learn more at www.ready.gov.

Scholarship Opportunities
Veterens of Foreign Wars
The Veterans of Foreign Wars organization hosts two scholarship opportunities each fall. The Patriot's Pen essay contest invites students in grades 6, 7 and 8 to explain why they honor the American flag in 300-400 words; and the Voice of Democracy competition invites high school students to submit an original 3-5 minute recorded speech on why their vote matters. The deadline for submitting entries is Wednesday, Oct. 31.

OSAA Officials Needed
Many of us take for granted the critical role officials play in high school sports. Without them, contests governed by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) couldn't happen. There are currently shortages of officials all across the state, including in the Hillsboro area. So if you'd like to remain a part of a sport you love and earn some extra money while giving back to your community, consider becoming an official! Additional information is available at www.osaa.org/officials.
