Family Nursing in Switzerland
Family nursing in Switzerland began with a Practice Implementation Project at Lindenhof Hospital in Bern, Switzerland. In 2000, Dr. Kit Chesla, USA introduced the Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models (Wright & Leahey, 2013) to a committed audience of practitioners and educators who began to envision the benefits of linking family nursing science across practice, research, and education.

Family nursing has now been successfully established in bachelor and masters curricula across several levels of tertiary nursing education, universities (Universitt und Fachhochschulen), and professional colleges (Hhere Fachschulen) in Switzerland. Family nursing training projects for beginning and experienced practice nurses and specialists have also been established. These ongoing implementation and application projects focus on family nursing in multiple settings from pediatrics to gerontology, from acute care to long-term care, and from inpatient to outpatient clinics and community nursing contexts.

Family nursing teaching materials in the German language have been developed. For further information contact IFNA member, Barbara Preusse-Bleuler, Switzerland: There are currently 8 IFNA members from Switzerland.
