Have you ever seen a bulldog lock his jaws? Oh my, it is almost comical! I remember our neighbor, Jeff, had a dog that he could lift off the ground and spin around once the dog locked his jaws onto the stick. The dog's eyes would get big and his face would say, "what am I doing?"
Have you been in a hard situation? Have you struggled and maybe even wanted to run? Have you been misjudged or corrected, and you weren't sure how to handle it? Have you needed to know how to answer so the situation could be made right or in order to move ahead?
Habakkuk felt this way when he said, "I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved." Hab 2:1 (KJV)
He did not say "I will listen to hear what God will say." And He did not say "I will watch to see what He will show me!" To see what they say means you understand it! "I see, I see, what you are saying!" It is more than hearing with your ears and seeing with our eyes! It is comprehending what is being relayed to us in such a way we know what to do!
Habakkuk gives us the key in how to get such an answer. It was in positioning himself. When he declared "I will stand my watch and set me upon the tower," he is saying that he is not moving off his decision! He is desperate to receive what is needed. He has set everything else aside to press into his time with God to get his needed answer. He has positioned himself to continue to listen and watch expecting God to give him what he needs. Do you feel his tenacity? It's like a bulldog locking his jaws to not let go until he has direction! This locking of the jaws is not rebellion towards others or to God. It is a locking of our will to go after God in such a way we are not letting go until we receive what we need. It's a settling within ourselves that God is the only one who can help us! It's like the desperate woman with the issue of blood touching Jesus' tallit (garment) in Matthew 9:20. She risked everything to go after Him!
I remember years ago when I was having surgery. They had given me anesthesia and they were trying to insert the breathing tube. The tube would not go down my throat and I could feel myself leaving my body. When I panicked I felt myself leaving faster. Suddenly, the bulldog in me came out! I grabbed ahold of God in such a way that I was saying "I trust You!" "If You want me to go, OK or if You want me to stay, OK!" "I trust You and it's Your call!" When I came to, I looked around to see where I was, Heaven or still here on Earth. The nurse was close by watching over me. I told her of my experience and she said, "We thought we had lost you!" "But suddenly you started breathing on your own so we could do the surgery." When I agreed with fear, fear took over. But when I agreed with faith (trusting God with my life) He took over!
God told Habakkuk what to do. "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it..... Behold, his soul which is lifted up (with pride) is not upright in him, but the just shall live by his faith."" Habakkuk 2:2-4 Humble yourself, lock your jaws into trusting God completely, and write down what you hear from Him! This is a time of transition for us all and we absolutely need His direction for us personally and for our nation....so press into God and lock your jaws for your answer!
