Civic Engagement

Your Civic Engagement table is offering information about UU Justice AZ’s Issues and Actions Day, coming up on Saturday, October 26. Register by Oct. 8 at tiny.cc/IssuesActions .

We also have details and a timeline for the LGBTQ “Desperado” Film Festival, October 11-13 at Paradise Valley Community College. The films’ topics include many that speak of urgent LGBTQ issues. More info at DesperadoFilmFestival.com .
Earth Justice Ministry
The Earth Justice Ministry invites you to join us Sunday, 10/06/19 at about 12:30 in Annex G for our regular monthly meeting. The date has been moved up to prepare for the following talk by Carol Manetta on Sunday, October 13.

Solutions NOW! Greening Planet Earth,
Abundant Food, Clean Waters

"Greening the Desert", large-scale planning for water generation and conservation in food production. Newcomers are welcome, and refreshments will be provided.

UUCP member and worker cooperatives author Carol Manetta will explain and show videos about quickly greening wastelands of Earth.

The solutions include growing ongoing organic food for people and wildlife and cleaning ponds, streams and rivers. All this will be done by coordinated trios of worker-owned cooperatives. Exciting!

Access through the Reap Goodness website, www.reapgoodness.org books on these topics: Worker Cooperative People Skills, and Worker Cooperative Technical Skills.

More info at:
Cooperatives for a Better World,  https://cooperativesforabetterworld.coop

U.S Federation of Worker Cooperatives,  https://usworker.coop/resources , the motherlode of information on how to get started and get help forming and running a worker-owned cooperative.

Green Tip: Drive more efficiently (fewer trips, less idling, coast to red lights) and, when needed, replace your old car with an electric or hybrid car.
Blue Tip: Take shorter (4-5 min.) showers and set your water heater to 120 degrees F. It will reduce energy used but not feel that different!

UUJAZ's Issues + Action Day
Do you have your Issues + Action Day tickets yet?

Tuesday October 8th is your LAST chance to register for Issues + Action Day. On October 26th, at the UU Church of Surprise, join UUJAZ, Unitarian Universalists, and friends from across Arizona to build relationships, community power, and purpose, together.
Our line-up includes:

  • A powerful justice worship service from Rev. Elizabeth Nguyen, former Senior Strategist for Side With Love, with inspiring music from Phoenix Women's Chorus.

  • A keynote workshop from the UU College of Social Justice: "Saying Yes, Saying No" inviting us into discernment. What is our call towards justice? What talents, skills, and knowledge do we bring to the movement, and where should we "plug-in"? After saying "yes!" to where we are called, can we say "no" to all the other ways to help?

  • Engaging workshops from grassroots justice partners, experts in issues from a broad range of topics, from throughout the state.

  • A celebration of the justice work in Arizona over the past year, and a peek at the work ahead.
Coffee and breakfast pastries from The Coronado, and a delicious vegan lunch from The Rez: An Urban Eatery.

  • A chance to browse the UU Book Fair.

  • For folks who are local, or staying overnight, you are invited to join UU Church of Surprise Sunday for service, followed by coffee and a closing circle.
Non-profits like ours often have a big, once a year fundraiser, and this is your chance to support UUJAZ! Thank you for your donation to continuing justice work all year. Your $50 ticket price covers your meals, and partial cost of holding the event.

We are committed to making Issue + Action Day inclusive to all. If you are a UU in Arizona, and need a financial scholarship to attend, please use the code IAMLOVED and feel welcomed as our guest.

Register Here by October 8th.
Any questions, please contact Janine at uujaz.director@gmail.com .

Longing For Belonging
Service Leader: Rev. Christine Dance
Brené Brown says that our desire for connection and love runs deep but that “when we ‘fit in’ instead of actually ‘belong,’ we mold ourselves to the situation instead of standing for our authentic self.” We will explore this month’s theme of Belonging and exploring how we both belong AND be authentic.

Upcoming: Share The Plate
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Urban Farm Program

The Urban Farm Program consists of 3 farms within the Metro Phoenix and surrounding areas that provide 3 acres of organic fresh fruits and vegetables (and sometimes fish!) to serve in five dining rooms around the Valley. In our farms, we not only provide a space for community members to give back, but also a space to learn about growing their own food in a sustainable way.

With your Share the Plate funds, our Urban Farms will be able to obtain additional and higher quality tools; we do not have enough for all the youth who may be with us at one time. We can also obtain seeds for our fall planting as well as gloves and masks.

To volunteer, contact Samantha Ansell by email: sansell@svdpaz.org or Phone: 602-850-6734.

For more information, see
Trust and Estate Planning Workshop
We can agree that adulting is not all fun and games. We can also agree that it is never too soon to plan for your family's future. With that in mind, the UU Foundation Board invites you one of two sessions of a Trust and Estate Planning Workshop on either the evening of Thursday, October 24th in Annex B following the Community Night dinner or the morning of Saturday, October 26th at 9 am in the Johnson Room. Each session will run about an hour and a half. Refreshments and childcare will be provided.

Please sign up on the clipboards on the counter in Office 2, or by emailing the Foundation Board at uufp@phoenixuu.org . If you have any questions you want to submit in advance to make sure they are answered as part of the workshop, please email those to the Foundation Board as well.
Have you noticed that some members have blue, yellow, or purple ribbons attached to their name tags?  These ribbons, which may say Theological Diversity, Radical Inclusion, or Justice Centered, are areas of personal study available to us in the form of on-demand classes, books, articles, videos, podcasts, social media, and other ways to reflect and discuss each topic. UUCP is in the process of organizing this program for fall 2019. Sign up to get a ribbon and be contacted about classes at a table in the back of the Sanctuary before and after each Sunday Service.
