Course Objectives

1.      Identify the disease process including the definition, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and clinical course of congestive heart failure.

2.      Understand the medical management for patients with acute and chronic CHF.

3.      Review the effects and uses of various pharmacological interventions for patients with heart failure.

4.      Select and provide rationale for utilization of various examination techniques for patients with heart failure in an effort to establish a PT/OT diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care.

5.      Evaluate various objective data including but not limited to analyzing heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart and lung auscultation.

6.      Develop, design, and describe the rationale and physiologic effects of various treatment techniques in managing patients with heart failure.

7.      Collaborate with classmates in analyzing and interpreting patient data in a given cardiac case study to enhance decision making in clinical practice.


Course Faculty

Konrad J. Dias PT, DPT, PhD, CCS received his B.S. in Exercise Physiology, masters and clinical doctorate (DPT) from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and academic doctorate (PhD in Physical Therapy) from Nova Southeastern University.  He is certified as a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist by the APTA Board of Clinical Specialties and has experience in the acute care, ICU and rehabilitation settings. He currently serves as Professor at Maryville University of St. Louis. Dr. Dias has presented nationally at several APTA Combined Section Meeting conferences, and has disseminated physical therapy internationally in Peru, Chile, India and Kuwait. He has authored several chapters in renowned textbooks and published articles and abstracts in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy.
