State of Arkansas

Arkansas saw its biggest increase in COVID-19 cases over the weekend. On Saturday there were 1,061 cases recorded and on Sunday there were 503, bringing the two-day weekend total to 1,564, bringing the cumulative total on Sunday to 28,367.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said that there were 572 cases detected in the last 24 hours, bringing the state's total to 28,939. Of the new cases, 77 of them were in Pulaski County. As far as testing, Arkansas has a COVID-19 positivity of 7.5 percent of all people tested.

The state's hospitalizations also saw an increase of 19 more people hospitalized, bringing that total to 439. Of the 439 people hospitalized, 89 are on ventilators.

There were two more deaths reported since yesterday, bringing the state's total to 323.

As of today, 6,510 cases are considered active with 127 in nursing homes, 958 in correctional facilities and 5,425 in the community.

Hutchinson and outgoing State Health Secretary Nate Smith re-emphasized the importance of wearing masks. They addressed misinformation about masks being "useless" on social media by saying that they are an important source of control. By source of control, Smith means that the masks keep people from spreading their own germs to others. Hutchinson said that the state will continue to educate people instead of mandating masks, believing that Arkansans are being receptive.
