Highlights From October's Program
Marin Symphony's
Jenny Douglass

We had a wonderful program with Jenny Douglass speaking on Women in Music. She took our members through the years of women's struggles to conduct, choose their own instruments, and audition fairly for major roles. She also treated us to two amazing pieces on her unique and rare instrument. Thank you Jenny!

Lisa Allanson brought two friends,
Falgumi Amin and Vanitha Jampath. They are both planning on joining our branch. Way to go Lisa! We should all be bringing our friends to events and widening our reach.

Torina won the symphony tickets drawing. We all got to take home a discount code for tickets to the Marin Symphony's wonderful season ahead. Here is what they will be playing:
TWO WAYS TO GIVE THIS NOVEMBER
Our branch will be participating in AAUW National's Giving Tuesday campaign to help donate to the unrestricted funds pool.  Giving Tuesday , often stylized as # GivingTuesday  for the purposes of hashtag activism, refers to the  Tuesday  after U.S. Thanksgiving in the United States. We will be promoting this campaign and asking our local branch members to donate $30 each. You will be able to donate on the  website , or  FaceBook  page. As the date gets closer we will be talking about this more. AAUW desperately needs unrestricted contributions before the end of the year.
Please help us fund the critical research and advocacy that AAUW National works so hard on to promote gender equity, AND this counts towards our branch winning our Five Stars! Let's be the first branch to get all five.
AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund

Fall is also when we begin fundraising for our  local scholarship programs  via the  AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund . Thanks to the generosity of members and friends and grants from Bank of Marin and the Compass Marin Community Fund in the last fund-raising cycle, we were able to sponsor 8 Marin middle school girls to attend AAUW’s Tech Trek STEM camp in July. We awarded $1,000 scholarships to 6 students in the transfer program at College of Marin and $3,000 each to two nontraditional women students at Dominican University. And, we sponsored a Dominican student’s attendance at AAUW’s leadership conference for college women student leaders (NCCWSL). With your help, we hope to repeat last year’s results.
Please bid high at the Silent Auction on December 7 (proceeds go to the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund) and respond to the fund-raising letter that will be mailed to you in November. Donations of any size are appreciated and welcomed at any time.

Monthly Interest group Profile
The Mah Jongg interest group meets the first, second and last Wednesday of the month, 1:00-3:00 PM, in members’ homes. An email is sent out to all members of the group telling them of the dates and hostesses for the upcoming month and then those who would like to play contact the hostess. We welcome everyone who would like to join a convivial, non-competitive group of AAUW Marin members for strategy, luck and fun. Freddie Greene, one of the members, recently won a game with all pairs, no jokers – a difficult feat! (see photo.) We play American Mah Jongg, as opposed to Chinese, and you do need a basic knowledge of the game. You are welcome to come and observe to see if this might be for you. We can also give you the names of instructors in Marin from whom you can take lessons to get up to speed. The facilitator of the group is Chris O’Neill. Contact her at coneill514@comcast.net or 415-457-0862 if you’d like more information or to get on the group’s email list. Come see why so many people are learning the game and loving it!

Welcome Catherine!)
Alice Calaprice
About me: I moved to Novato last year, after living in Princeton, NJ, for 38 years, then in Southern California for ten years (after retirement). I graduated from UC Berkeley, Class of ’63, with a BA in sociology. My career was at Princeton University Press, where I was a Senior Editor for 24 years. During that time and later, I also wrote and co-wrote eight books about Albert Einstein, five of them published by Princeton. I was born in Germany, immigrated as a child, and I have a son (in San Francisco) who has two daughters, and a daughter (in Southern California) who has two sons. Besides being with family and friends, I enjoy foreign travel, landscape and wildlife photography, animals, needlework, reading, and gardening.

Robin DiMatteo
Robin DiMatteo is a Psychologist and Emerita Professor from the University of California, Riverside (UCR), where she spent her entire four-decade academic career before moving to the Bay Area. She grew up in Boston and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Psychology from Tufts University. She did her graduate work at Harvard University, where she received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with a dissertation grant from the AAUW, for which she is very grateful. In her career, Robin served as Chair of the Department of Psychology and received the Distinguished Teaching Award at UCR, and she has maintained a strong commitment to helping women and LGBTQ students negotiate the challenges of academia. Robin lives with her husband and miniature Schnauzer in San Rafael; their daughter is a Child Psychologist in San Francisco.
My career was spent working in the field of chemistry as a Clinical laboratory Scientist at the UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco.
Six years ago I joined AAUW Marin after learning from a close friend about the wonderful programs the branch had to offer each month. On becoming a member I joined the Headlines interest group, attended monthly programs and participated in helping with a STEM workshop at the College of Marin and the December holiday auction. As membership chair it is important to me to welcome new members and guests and tell them of all of the wonderful things that AAUW has to offer on the National, State and Branch level and let them know of the many different ways they may become involved. In retirement, I enjoy spending time with my husband traveling, hiking and attending classical, jazz and ragtime concerts.

I am a city planner for a consulting firm in Berkeley, and I focus on transportation, environmental, and public outreach projects. I graduated from Cal Poly SLO a year ago and have been working to establish a quality network in Marin, one way of which has been through AAUW. I’m currently on the programs committee and the communication committee. In my free time I like to hike and go on runs with my dog!
