Dear Middle School Families,

As a school which exists to provide Christ-centered education, it was very good to attend our first chapel of the year.  Our middle school Chapel Leadership students led us in worship, we watched a couple of video presentations from our Chapel Media Arts students, and we considered the Word.

Mrs.  Cassinelli, who has been a part of the  VCS family as administrative support in our Radio Conservatory, and now also in our middle school office, shared of her personal struggles with being bullied in school, and shared of heroic efforts made by teachers and students to come to her rescue.  She challenged the students as to our unique opportunity to share the love of Christ in our school setting, and to look out for one another.

Mr. Ben Davis, our head of school, attended chapel and introduced himself and welcomed our students to a new school year.

Please pray for our students and school.

In His Service,
Joseph Rowland
2018 VCMS Retreat

Date:   September 11th-14th
Where:  Koinonia Christian Conference Grounds
What:  A place of renewal where our students meet the
Creator in His creation.  Retreat is a priceless time, bonding our student body as a family.  The kids often think of this as one of the highlights of their school year at VCMS.

We are blessed to have Dr. Lasslo joining us once again this year as our  Retreat Doctor .  He makes sure your student takes their required meds on time and takes care of any emergency we may run up on.  Thank you Dr. Lasslo!
PLEASE NOTE!   Medical forms  are to be returned the day we leave for retreat WITH the medication, labeled with your student's name in a Ziploc type bag.

As we announced, Ryan Gonzalez will be our speakers this year. Ryan is a youth minister serving local churches. Please be praying for him as he comes to deliver God's Word to our students. Our worship team consists of Zach Henry and Mariah Davis.

Middle School Extended Care pick up

ATTENTION: Middle school parents whose children attend extended care. Parents will need to pick up their students from Mrs. Hill's office during after school hours. It is located near the Elementary office and the business office. After school extended care will take place in room EL25, but parent pick up will always be Mrs. Hill's office. Students will be released to Mrs. Hill's office so parents do not need to make two trips.

V.C.S Extended Care Afterschool Enrichment Program

V.C.S. Afterschool Homework Assistance/ Tutorial Program
Monthly Classes

The purpose of the VCS After School Homework and Tutorial Program is to help students with their daily homework in all subjects. The students will be given the time, attention, and the help that they need to nurture their unique style and accomplish their learning goals for the day. The program will be in a group setting; answering general questions and not necessarily one on one tutoring.   If individual needs arise, Mrs. G will do her best to support the student by giving some one on one instruction.

Each afternoon, they'll begin tackling the day's homework assignments and if there is extra time, they will wrap up with reading time, writing prompts, and drill games.
This program is offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, for grades third thru sixth. Mrs. G will work closely to ensure that materials and methods are up- to- date and effective. Communication with parents regarding their child's homework and academic progress is recommended and encouraged.

Cost: $180.00 per month and will be billed to your Smart tuition account. Your child will be picked up from Extended Care and returned at the end of class each day, if not picked up in the classroom which is EL 27. Last day for signing up for the month of September will be Tuesday, September 4, 2018. If you choose to sign up after that you must do so by stopping in the Extended Care Office to pick up a form.

" From Pharoahs to Franklin"
In-House VCMS History Field Trip presented by Ancient Artifacts

On October 23, VCMS will celebrate History Alive with a variety of grade specific and whole school presentations. Ancient Artifacts will return to school to present Ancient Egypt to the 6th grade, The Romans to 7th grade, and American Revolution to the 8th grade classes. These interactive presentations include artifacts and enthralling stories for the students that relate to their classroom history units. After lunch, the all grades will attend an all school assembly to watch a medieval joust and weaponry demonstration.

A full day of learning and activity spanning historical ages has become one of our VCMS traditions for the past 7 years. Student accounts will be billed $18 with their October bill to cover the cost of the presentations. Classroom attendance is limited but parents are welcome to join us at the Sports complex for the Medieval Tournament at 12:45.
8th Grade: "The American Revolution" This 60 minute presentation is a lively mixture of historic fact, storytelling and humor which brings to life the birth of our nation. During this offering, students will be given demonstrations of some of the everyday skills that colonial soldiers used in the fight for independence. Authentic artifacts from the revolutionary period will be handled by the students and they will come away from the presentation with a better understanding of the conflict that spawned our nation.

7th Grade: The Roman Legion
This 60 minute presentation takes the students on a Roman military campaign. The Roman Legion program utilizes genuine artifacts and Roman mythology to illustrate the importance of military expansion to the Roman civilization as well as the innumerable benefits that the empire brought to the people it touched. In the classic style of oral tradition, students are interactively taught about Roman gods as well as some of the Empire's most famous people and events.

6th Grade: The Egyptian Afterlife"
On the premise of providing the necessary items for the teacher to go into the afterlife, our Egyptian presentation utilizes genuine artifacts and Egyptian mythology to demonstrate the perception of life and death held by the ancient Egyptians. This hands -on enrichment program helps the students appreciate the ancient Egyptians' outlook on natural phenomena, art, architecture, monotheism vs. polytheism, as well as the role of women in society   Medieval Tournament: All School Assembly The "Medieval Tournament" is a most dramatic offering, featuring choreographed "combat" between three fully armored "Knights" from different periods of the era. These visiting "Knights" offer an explanation of the medieval arms race between the development of weapons and armor. They will also demonstrate how the  tournaments evolved from their origin in judicial duels, to the full-on sporting events they became.

Congratulations! 7th and 8th grade NJHS members were given their renewal notices for the current academic year. To remain eligible once inducted, a student must maintain a 3.5 semester GPA. Students are bringing home a letter of renewal which includes the $10 annual membership billing fee that will post to their accounts in October. The 8th grade students also have their permission forms for their service project field trip to the Fallen Heroes Ceremony in October at the Sacramento Valley Veteran's Cemetery.

NEW Applications were given to eligible students to apply for NJHS membership. Students who apply now and are accepted become full members immediately, but will be inducted at the  February 12 Induction Gala.
