Fantastic Rubbish: Trash to Treasure Exhibit Reception

Artists were invited to create work using recyclable materials: newspapers, plastic bottles, cardboard, metal, wood, etc. Plastics, paper, glass and other recyclables are becoming more difficult to deal with, and the featured artists have creatively turned trash into treasure.
Participants include professional artists from across the state as well as local middle school students. Ron Love of Bowling Green, KY creates paintings with soda and beer cans, Berea artist Debra Hille is creating a "plastic woman" and Robbie Mueller of Oldham County creates one-of-a-kind folk art with found objects. Patricia Weiner's art students at Foley Middle School created artistic benches from wooden pallets in a project led by Lexington artist Dave Cooper. The project was funded by Arts for All Kentucky which provides opportunities for people with disabilities to be part of the life of their communities.

When a mysterious talking groundhog steals young Ellie's homework, she takes off down a hole after it and finds herself in a place where nothing is as it seems - the Land of Rejected Fairy Tale Characters. Here, Ellie meets a crazy assortment of misfits who were cut from the fairy tales we all know and love. There's her shadow-fearing sidekick, Groundhog; Mac, the eighth and world's largest dwarf; Jacqueline, the great Giant Slayer armed with a magic polka-playing accordion; and more - Indecisive Goldilocks, Sleepless Beauty, Little Red Robin Hood, Fairy Godfather, and even Big Bad Platypus. Groundhog and the rest of the misfits make a deal to help Ellie find her way back home if, in return, she writes them into stories that can be shared with others. But Queen White-Out and her eraser minions, Pink Pearl and Big Mistake, have other plans. Will the misfits be erased forever, or will they find their own happily ever after?

It's the day after Thanksgiving, and all Ellie and her new husband, Jackson, want is to celebrate their first holiday season at home together. But their holiday peace and quiet quickly turns into holiday chaos when they are summoned to the security office at the local mall. Seems Ellie's backwoods relatives were planning to surprise her with a visit, but first stopped at the store to pick up some paper goods. That's when the trouble began. What they thought was a big-box store turned out to be a shopping mall full of frenzied Black Friday shoppers, and, of course, the hillbilly family ended up causing all sorts of trouble. As Ellie's family unravels their hysterical stories - like Ellie's brothers trying to take a ride on the fancy moving staircase only to find themselves sliding around on the ice rink and taking out Santa's village - one simple truth is revealed. These country bumpkins might not know much about modern-day living, but they sure do understand what the holiday season is about... and it ain't shopping.

A twelve-week workshop based on the "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, an empowering book for aspiring and working artists.
The workshops will begin on Tuesday, August 20, from 7:00 till 9:00 pm. The instructor, Glenda White, will lead participants through a comprehensive program to recover their creativity from a variety of blocks, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity.
There is absolutely no requirement to be a "real" artist, or to know anything about creating in order to benefit from this class. The class requires the text, "The Artist's Way" (25th Anniversary Edition) available in paperback. Second hand books are easily found through local used booksellers or on
Amazon.com.

The Kentucky Artisan Center showcases ornaments and holiday
gifts in a display of trees in the Center's lobby. Holiday wreaths and trees will appear throughout the Center highlighting the many ornaments and artworks for special gift giving throughout the holidays.
The Art of the Book: 45 Years of Larkspur Press
(October 20, 2019 - January 31, 2020)
This exhibit celebrates 45 years of Larkspur Press owned and operated by artist Gray Zeitz.
Larkspur Press, located just outside of Monterey, KY, has produced hundreds of fine, letterpress, hand- bound editions of works by Kentucky poets and writers for 45 years. Zeitz is the most important designer and printer working in Kentucky and he has published at least a dozen beautiful, handmade chapbooks by his friend Wendell Berry.
The "Art of the Book" exhibit will showcase printed broadsides - poems with illustrations published by hand letterpress Larkspur Press. The show will also include actual wood engravings by the roster of fine artists Zeitz uses to illustrate his publications. Illustrators/artists include Wesley Bates, of Canada, Joanne Price, of Bagdad, John Lackey, of Lexington, Carolyn Whitsel, of Cincinnati, Laura Lee Cundiff, of Versailles and John Dixon pf Danville.
Zeitz and his press are well known in the world of hand letterpress art and he has published poems by almost every Kentucky Poet Laureate and nearly all of Wendell Berry's poetry. Zeitz began his typography career as an apprentice at the University of Kentucky King Library Press under the tutelage of Carolyn Hammer. Learning the skills of fine hand printing and typographic design he went on to establish Larkspur Press in 1974.
Also on display is an array of Larkspur Press books both in hardback and soft cover formats by many Kentucky Poet Laureates such as Mary Ann Taylor Hall, Richard Taylor, Jeff Worley, Frederick Smock and others.

John Martin, of Berea, will demonstrate how he creates pottery on the wheel on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center. Martin creates unusual shapes by altering his wheel thrown forms. He is well known for his vibrant and rich glazes.

Figurative Clay Sculptures Demonstrated by David Waltz
Artist David Waltz, of Columbia, will demonstrate how he sculpts clay into a wide array of figures that tell a story. He will demonstrate on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10:30 to 3:30 at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Waltz's work is regularly available at the Center.

Wax Ornaments Created by Christa Smith
On Saturday, Nov. 23, Christa Smith, of Elizabethtown, will demonstrate how she creates wax ornaments with molds. Smith decorates the cooled wax ornaments with acrylic paint to bring out the details in each ornament. This type of ornament is common in Germany, Smith's country of birth.

Gourd Ornaments Created by Paul Buhrmester
On Saturday, Nov. 30, Paul Buhrmester, of Bowling Green, will create ornaments from uniquely shaped gourds. Buhrmester uses a wood burning tool and paint to decorate each gourd in different patterns and colors.

Visual artists, how would you portray the concept and emotions of music? In January 2019 the Berea Arts Council moved and expanded its offerings. In addition to exhibits, we now offer a singer/songwriter series featuring local and regional musicians. The popular sessions and exceptional music inspired the concept for this exhibit. We invite you to submit works of visual art inspired by music, in whatever shape or form it speaks to you! The exhibit is open to any visual interpretation of music and any 2-D or 3-D medium. All submitted works must be ready to hang (using wire) or display on a pedestal.

Tab Caudill
is a Central Kentucky songwriter, and a queen of heartbreak ballads. She believes the best songs come from the darkest of times, and that hurting is something we all can relate to. Writing folk rock tunes for over a decade now, Caudill puts on display painfully vulnerable lyrics to match with gut wrenching belts, and stories of a lover's past.
Catching Apples
is an Indie Folk band formed by Patrick Woods and Tyler Devall in 2017. What began as a moonshine fueled jam session - quickly developed into a legitimate project - due to the bands natural collaborative chemistry - finishing three songs in just three sessions. With Woods and Devall sharing the roles of lead singer/songwriter and accompanying each other accordingly, mainly on guitar and banjo, their music is quite varied - from light hearted pop - to dark introspective folk - with harmonies - both heavenly and haunting - throughout.

For those of you who would love to learn to ferment your own foods and truly understand what it's all about, this is a great opportunity for you. Many people are afraid to ferment as we were taught that foods belong in the refrigerator or freezer or need to be full of preservatives in order to not be "poison". But long before we had modern technology, our ancestors preserved their food through fermentation.
When you understand how it works - it will put all fears to rest. It's actually a very simple process, easier than cooking or baking. Join us and learn why the process works, the underlying principles, and how to do it properly. This demo will be sauerkraut. We will be making traditional sauerkraut and you will also get to taste a couple of variations using other ingredients along with the cabbage. You will also discover the best way to add fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, to your daily diet. You will leave knowing how to save money by making your own sauerkraut and how to make it to your own taste.

Kentucky Trail Town
Fall is such a great time to go outside and see Kentucky's natural beauty. Come visit Berea and hike through our breathtaking trails!
You can see a waterfall, stunning views of the mountains, and also enjoy the beauty of the flowers blooming.
Maps to hike or bike some of Berea's various trails are located in the Welcome Center at 3 Artist Circle off of N. Broadway and on our website at www.visitberea.com/recreation-nature.
Enjoy scenic views at the Pinnacles and Anglin Falls, take a nice stroll or bike ride along one of our lovely shared use paths through town, or launch your kayak at Owsley Fork Reservoir. Your experience is waiting for you!

Classes in traditional dance styles including English clog, Country, Morris dance, rapper, Danish, Appalachian clogging, and square dance, plus singing, music, crafts and parties.
