Chilly Fun Fishing Day Brings Warmth to Kids
Volunteers, sponsors and donors work together for extraordinary event
The wind was blowing and the air was nippy on October 12, but that didn't stop the kids and families from Shriner's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House in Galveston from coming out to Pelican Rest Marina for the annual Fun Fishing Day!
A total of 21 children were paired with volunteers of all ages for a 60-minute tournament where trophies were presented for Biggest Fish (18" stingray), Smallest Fish (3" piggy perch), and Most Fish Caught (25!). Lunch was provided by Capt. Sean Welsh and his
Cool Cookers team while Kristen Davis from
Mary Had A Little Party served up a sweet ice cream bar for everyone! Some even had dessert first!

 POC Toy Run set for December 7
Spread holiday cheer by making a donation or dropping off new, unwrapped toys
Thanksgiving may be on everyone's mind, but it's never too early to start thinking about how to help those less fortunate this Christmas! The POC Toy Run had its beginning in 2002 when some friends got together to deliver some new toys to the Angel Tree program in Port O'Connor, Texas. Now it its 17th year, the event continues to grow and word keeps spreading.
But the secret is still safe... We never actually see the children we serve, so as far as they know... it was all done by Santa!
Become one of Santa's elves and help continue this incredible Club tradition. Here's how you can help fill Santa's bag this year:
- Join the Toy Run in your own boat!
- Purchase and donate new unwrapped toys for children (2-16 years old) and drop them off at the Club office or one of the locations listed below!
- Make a donation to HBGFC, and we will purchase toys on your behalf!
The Port O'Connor Toy Run will be held December 7, and departure time from Surfside Marina is at 9am. A full schedule and complete details are available HERE, so grab your Santa hat and share spread holiday cheer... And let us know if you're interested in being an official "Club Boat"!

Captain's Corner

Now that we've had a couple of good cold fronts push through, it's starting to feel a little more like hunting season around here.
So far, we've already had a great dove season in south Texas and the quail population is looking very promising for this year as long as the weather cooperates. Heavy precipitation in the fall was partially responsible for the slow quail season we had last year, but so far the conditions have been very favorable. All of the flooding last year in October also caused the waterfowl to scatter throughout the Southern states, but this season the ducks should be more concentrated which will give hunters some better opportunities for great outings in the fields and marshes this year.

Over the years, I think it's interesting and telling to compare the fishing with the satellite data......overall, the Texas marlin fishing was, with a few amazing exceptions, off compared to the last couple years. Check out the pictures below, comparing the altimetry and currents during this year's Shootout to last year's Shootout.
This year, seemed like the bite was kind of slow most places, but the fish caught were kind of spread out......last year, amazing fishing at Hoover Diana, great fishing out in front of POC and Port A.
As we go into the cool months and project season, one of the things that always interests me is what next year will bring.........
