Grant Submissions and Board of Director Nominations and VMX 2019, Oh My!

We received several submissions for the two $2,500 grants (one sponsored by Purina and the other by the AARV) that the board of directors will vote on within the next couple of weeks. The two winners will be formally announced in the AARV's November newsletter and will present their research at VMX 2020. Thanks to all who submitted grant proposals!

The AARV-sponsored grant of $5,000 is still available for non-traditional ACVSMR residents. All submissions are due by December 1st, and the winner will present at VMX 2021.

We have also received nominations for the board of director positions of Treasurer, Membership Chair and Technician Liaison. Ballots will be sent to all AARV voting members via email. Please read the nominees' CVs and Letters of Intent, which will be provided.

Our VMX 2019 lineup is solidified and we hope you'll join us in Orlando on January 21st for the AARV track. Dr. Andrea Leigh Henderson and Kelley Meyer will be giving several talks including those titled:
  • "Outcome Measures and Assessment in Canine Physical Rehabilitation"
  • "The Pathway to a New Rehab Space"
  • "Lumbosacral Stenosis in Working Dogs: What Can We Learn from Human Back Pain"
We will also be having a panel discussion later in the day titled "The Business of Rehab: Pearls and Tips from the Experts." Panelists will include Drs. Evelyn Orenbuch, Jessica Waldman, Leilani Alvarez, Tari Kern and Megan Ridley as well as Stuart Napshin.

Last, but not least, we will finish the track with our two 2017 grant winners. Dr. Theresa Pancotto's winning grant submission, "Post-operative Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation for Reduction of Stifle Edema in Canine Patients Undergoing TPLO," will be presented by Alexandra Kelly. And Dr. Jennifer Repac will present her winning grant research, "The Effect of Dr. Buzby's Toe GripsĀ® on Lameness Scores and Client Specific Outcome Measures After Canine Tibial Plateau-leveling Osteotomy."

Don't miss this day o' learning and don't forget to join the AARV at the lunch break for the annual membership meeting.

As always, please contact the AARV board if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?

Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents.  Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research  is taught by CRI faculty member  Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR who has spent more than 30 years doing research.

The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

AARV members receive a 10% tuition discount. If you have questions or are interested in registering for the next session, email CRI at [email protected].
