Happy 4th of July from the
Blue Jay Staff!

We hope that you'll enjoy a picnic and some fun at Blue Jay this holiday weekend.  Just a reminder  that there is
No Swimming
allowed  anywhere
at Blue Jay Point County Park. We understand how tempting it can be to hop in but the waterways that surround us are high traffic boating ways the water edges could have sharp objects (old glass, metal, fish hooks) that might injure you and there are no lifeguards at this park.

Please be respectful of the park rules and make sure you're socially distancing properly.

Blue Jay Point's
park gates are currently OPEN
from 8 a.m.  until 9 p.m.

is opening for the Season on
July 4th!

Blue Jay's restrooms
and water fountains
are open!

Visitors must still comply with guidelines set forth by the state:
  • gathering with no more than 25 people
  • maintaining physical distance
of at least six feet from any other person not part of your household
  •  wearing a mask indoors or out  when physical distancing is not possible

Measures to limit the number of people allowed in the park at one time remain in place. If a gate is closed or cones are blocking the entrance, that means the park has reached capacity. Parks that are run by towns or cities may be operating differently-please reach out to them directly before visiting their parks.

The following restrictions will remain in place at Wake County parks and preserves through at least July 31
:

* Playgrounds and park centers are closed.
* Park programs and events are canceled.
* Special operations, such as boat rentals, group camping and lodge rental, are not available.
* Shelter rentals and other park use agreements are canceled.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our digital programming at wakegov.com/parks/fromhome.

Volunteers
Needed!

If you are looking for a change of scenery and want to spend a time outside on a volunteer project, we could REALLY use teens and adults to help weed the Blue Jay Educational Garden!  No experience needed--we can point out a single species of weed to you and make you a weed expert!  We recommend mornings when it is cool, and just an hour would help a lot. Email us at
[email protected]m
 to set up a time!

WANTED!
Empty Altoids Tins

The Blue Jay Education Staff uses empty Altoids tins in lots of camp crafts and for small parts management in our Discovery Boxes.  We've completely used up our stash and would appreciate more.

If you have empty tins to share, please leave them in a bag by the Staff Door on the Education Center porch.

Have you enjoyed a day in the park recently?  Walked on our trails? Enjoyed a family picnic? or simply have something you'd like us to know about?  Please follow the link below to fill out a short anonymous survey so we can know what our park visitors are  thinking about!

Have you visited
Blue Jay Point from Home yet?

Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space educators have been hard at work for the past month creating fun and educational content for all ages that you can enjoy from the  comfort of your own home, until we can invite you for educational programs in the parks again!

Currently,
has  a focus on turtles. You can find
  • 3 three different levels of Word Finds (teens and adults--there is a Challenge one!)
  • Links to turtle-themed Story Times for a variety of audiences--new stories added!
  • Turtle craft project ideas
  • Spot the Differences in our pond scene
  • Links to Tidbit Tuesday videos--new ones added weekly!
  • Digital JIGSAW PUZZLES!

Check back often as we frequently add
new items,  and be sure to check out similar
pages  at our sister parks' websites!

Join Wake County park staff
as we explore our backyards!

This is what staff member D'Nise Hefner spotted cruising across her backyard on a damp June day!

This female was noticed from a very long distance because of her light coloration.  She was also quite large, but it is hard
to tell in this picture!
And this is how we knew the box turtle was a female--she had flat plastron and lovely brown eyes!  We expect that she was on her way to lay eggs.
  •  on social media to share photos of what you see and check out what we're finding too.
We can't wait to see what you find!
