THE PLAYERS PRESENT FUNNY GIRL!
Funny Girl is the bittersweet, classic musical drama about Vaudeville's sweetheart, Fanny Brice. Featuring some of Broadway's most treasured songs such as People and Don't Rain on My Parade, this classic musical tells the story of the comedienne who started out as a bit player on the Vaudeville stage but worked her way up to stardom as one of the most acclaimed members of the Ziegfeld Follies.

Funny Girl follows Fanny's rise to fame and highlights her comedic and musical prowess. It also explores her amazing, yet strained relationship with her husband, Nick Arnstein, a professional gambler. Funny Girl is witty, glamorous, and a general spectacle that portrays some of the most vibrant characters in Broadway history and their strong, but strained relationships.

The Players are thrilled to open their 100th season with this extravagant musical production including an extremely talented cast, clever choreography, outstanding costumes, elaborate sets, and a 21 piece orchestra all on the 51 Walden stage.

Performances are November 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 & 23 at 8:00pm and November 10 & 17 at 2:00pm. Subscriptions for the entire season are still available.

After last year's great success, your favorite fairy tale princesses and special guests are returning to the Concord Players on Saturday, December 7th, for two events: a musical fairy tale meet-and-greet in the afternoon, and an adults-only "Pixie Dust After Dark" cabaret at night.  Local talents include Concord Players members Amanda Casale (Spamalot) and Meghan Rose (Funny Girl), as well as Lauren Cantos Smith, Samantha Casale, Audrey Clark, Jessica DePalo, Cara Guappone, Adina Lundquist, Jose Merlo, Kara Nelson, Barbara Pierre, Eric Rehm, Tristyn Sepersky, Carole Shannon, Daniel Sullivan, and Ryan Trapani-Goldberg.

The meet-and-greet at 2pm invites children (in age or at heart) to interact up close and personal with twelve fairy tale princesses as each performs their trademark musical number.  There will be exclusive time put aside for photos with all of the princesses, as well as royally inspired gifts, food, drinks, and a surplus of musical and magical spirit.  Your every dream will come true, for nowhere else can you meet THIS MANY princesses in one place!

Who says fairy tales are just for kids? At 8pm, our twelve performers are joined by several special guests to present a cabaret of villainous and more mature musical numbers, featuring a series of solos, duets, mash-ups, and medleys of your favorite royal numbers.  Join us for beer, wine, food, laughs, and some magical nostalgia for a truly enchanted evening.

Tickets can be reserved on the Concord Players website, and purchased at the door for $15 per event (cash or check only).  A wonderful time is sure to be had by all the fairest guests in the land!
A READING OF A CHRISTMAS CAROL
As part of Concord's annual holiday celebration, on Sunday, December 1st at 3:00pm Concord Players member Johnny Kinsman will perform a dramatic reading of the beloved holiday classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, with illustrative slides, at 51 Walden Street in Concord Center.

Victorians rejoiced when Dickens' novella was published in 1843, hailing it as "a new gospel," and adopting Scrooge's happy new greeting for the holiday: Merry Christmas! Readings and performances of A Christmas Carol quickly became a beloved holiday tradition in Victorian England, and the story of Scrooge's redemption has remained a classic for every generation since.

Kinsman, who grew up in Concord, is an actor, director, producer, writer and storyteller who cut his teeth in theatre at Act/Tunes, now Concord Youth Theatre. His professional career was launched with a BFA in Theater from Syracuse University where he received the prestigious Edward G. Greer Award for Excellence in Classical Acting. He is currently Associate Artistic Director for Anthem Theater in Boston where his work includes both Dromios in A Comedy of Errors; Fezziwig in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol; Coach "Friar" Lawrence in Romeo vs. Juliet (which he also penned); Flynn in The Merry Way; and Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night of the Living Dead.

Kinsman admits to being sentimental and has loved Dickens' story since he was a child. "I feel like my soul is refreshed every time I read it," he says. "It's a feeling I want to share with everyone I meet."
The Concord Players are pleased to present this free event to the town in a celebration of good will during the holiday season.

God bless us, Everyone!

100TH BIRTHDAY PARTY RECAP
There were no signs of old age at the Players' 100th birthday party on October 20th. No, it was with the enthusiasm and vigor of the very young (and young at heart) that one hundred and seventy-five Players, past and present, packed the hall at 51 Walden for a happy celebration of a century of theater. They partied with gusto at a fete that rivaled the bright lights of Broadway.

Guests were greeted by a 5-ft birthday "cake" in the lobby, designed by Brian Harris, complete with birthday candles and crowned with a cake topper boasting the sparkling numerals "100." The "confection," which happily is non-perishable, will remain in the lobby for the season. Players will commemorate the centennial in three segments with shows that represent the first, second, and third eras of the century, and with lobby exhibitions of archival material.

The hall was dressed for the party with glittering cloths of silver and gold on table-tops, and adorned with top hats, white gloves, and pearls, timeless symbols of style and panache. The theme reflected the Players' first 30 years, spanning from the end of WWI to the white-telephone movies of the 1930s. Twinkling white lights winked at party-goers from the walls, adding an extra touch of glamour.

Food was abundant and presented with the artful flair that only a theater company would care to craft. Multi-tiered displays of hors d'oeuvres towered over elegant silver trays of delicacies. A shining silver vase displayed an extravagant bouquet of pink plumes on the center table. The gathering was imbued with a feeling of warmth and camaraderie, enhanced no doubt by generous servings of fine champagne and sips of "The Bees Knees," a gin and lemon-honey-water concoction recreated from a 1920s recipe.

The festivities opened with remarks from the Players' president Jay Newlon, elegantly attired in tuxedo and white silk scarf.  State Representative Tami Gouveia presented an official declaration from the Massachusetts House of Representatives recognizing the milestone occasion and spoke of the importance of art as an essential element to a fulsome life.  Mike Lawson, Chair of Concord's Select Board, then proclaimed October 20th as "Concord Players Day" and hailed the organization's contributions to the community's cultural and economic vitality.

Co-chairs Paul Murphy and Tracy Wall teased the assembly with an overview of all the 100th festivities to come.  Party goers were treated to an informed and thought-provoking presentation about Vaudevillian Fanny Brice, the main character in the Players' upcoming production of Funny Girl, by theater historian Trav S.D., who came to Concord from the Big Apple to help the Players celebrate.

Right on cue, Trav was followed by a sneak preview of the show by the Players' Funny Girl cast. Director Brian Kelly could be spotted beaming from the back of the house as Meghan Rose, in the role of Fanny, delivered a tender, heart-rending performance of the show's iconic song People, proving our young performer could step out of the looming shadow of a giant like Streisand and claim the song as her own.

When not imbibing in the Bees Knees, or reveling in the hall, party goers edified themselves on the Players' history by strolling through the lobby where a museum-style display chronicled the Players' years from 1919 through 1942. The display was meticulously researched by the History subcommittee, including Jean Devine, Linda McConchie, Susan Tucker, and Tracy Wall, who pored over stacks of archival material from CP's vault and the special collections housed at the Concord Library. The exhibit gives an absorbing look at the Players' early years, its ongoing commitment to the highest standard of theater craft, and its values of intellectual growth and community spirit.

The evening was an apt beginning to a season that will celebrate the Players' inspired origins and the spirit of fellowship and goodwill that continues to enthuse its members.

It is that spirit of fellowship and collaboration which defines theater as an art form, and that is why so many of us love to participate. This birthday party was a production just like any other, and required the same convergence of many heads and hearts to bring inspired thinking, imaginative planning, and good old fashioned elbow grease to its making.

Thank you to the entire committee (pictured l-r above): Andrea Roessler, Ben Hescott, Susan Tucker, Jay Newlon, Paul Murphy (Co-Chair), Lisa Astbury, Tracy Wall (Co-Chair), Leslie Wagner, Jean Devine, and Linda McConchie. The Birthday Bash Team also includes Carol Antos, Charlie Atherton, Meg Spring, Charlie Streff, and Paul Gill.  Thank you to all who participated.
