The September program calendar is posted and available for registration and, once again, an month of programming to learn, share, engage and give awaits. 

Because Labor Day weekend often holds one last summer vacation or family get-together, and the Jewish High Holy Days are early this year, we've included info about several early September programs in today's edition below to make sure you are aware of them and offer plenty of time to register for them.

M en's Coffee & Conversation

It's caffeine and camaraderie for the male members of MCC and guests! This group meets every other Thursday and is hosted by various members who get the conversation going. Please register by the Monday prior to Men's Coffee and Conversation. This week, MCC member Tony Hofstede hosts guest speaker, Lt. Bob Kroll, head of the Minneapolis Police Union. The topic: "Keeping Us Safe." Public safety has been and continues to be an important issue and concern. Lt. Kroll will speak about today's challenges among the rank and file--such as morale, training and street crime--and his take on the proposed charter change to give more authority and responsibility to the city council over the police chief. Tony says Lt. Kroll is very candid, informative and entertaining.

Driven to Discover: The Bell Museum

Explore the Bell Museum just weeks after the highly anticipated grand opening on July 14! Embark on a guided tour of the Bell Museum and enjoy a conversation with Dr. Holly Menninger, director of public engagement and science learning, about the expanded reach of the Bell to include its Outdoor Learning Landscape and planetarium. See next generation scientists as they explore the process and delicate ecosystem of native plants and pollinators in the Hive Mind summer camp.

This is one in an ongoing MCC program series under the banner "Driven to Discover." The series features University of Minnesota faculty and students sharing current research and programming at the University.

Nosy Neighbor Tour: Cuningham Group

Experience a Virtual Reality demonstration, which the firm uses to help design projects of every kind.

Our Turn: A Conversation for Women

MCC women, you are invited to attend Our Turn: A Conversation for Women. This week Nancy Verdier will lead a discussion on what brings you joy -- the big things, the little things, the serious and the silly things. What made you joyful as a child? How can we bring joy to others today?

Our Turn meets every other Thursday, alternating between morning and afternoon times. Hosts and topics change each time.

Schedule time with a tech support guru and have your nagging technology questions answered during our complimentary Help Desk. Support for both Apple products and PCs is available. After you register, MCC will confirm the time of your 20-minute one-on-one session. Reminder: Installing or upgrading software and creating accounts cannot be included in the Help Desk session, as they exceed the allotted appointment time.

Many Kinds of Grief: Responding to Loss

What to say? What to do? These are common questions we ask ourselves when news comes of a loss of health, skills, place, resources, mobility or death. In this practical session, perspectives and a wide range of responses will be presented, demonstrated and discussed. All sorts of losses will be addressed. Ted Bowman, a grief and family educator, is an adjunct instructor in the School of Social Work at the University of St. Thomas, teaching about grief counseling.

After Hours Connect: Behind the Scenes at Almanac
Friday, September 7, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
Twin Cities PBS, 172 E 4th St, St. Paul
Join other MCC men and women for a behind-the-scenes evening with Almanac, TPT's award-winning public affairs program. Experience a live broadcast, and go behind the scenes with access to the control room and studio. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served prior to the broadcast, with dessert and a Q&A with the Almanac talent afterwards. Space is limited to 30 guests; registration deadline is August 31.

Twin Cities PBS is located above the Lowertown Parking Ramp, which has an entrance on both Jackson and Sibley Streets. Elevators are at the east end of the ramp (Sibley St.) Take the elevator to the skyway level (K).

News From Members

MCC member Claudia Kittock invites members to attend a performance of the Mill City Players on August 21 at 7 pm in MacPhail Center for Music's Antonello Hall, or on August 25 at 1:30 pm in Central Library's Pohlad Hall. The performance will be in 3 sections: Movement, Drumming and Acting. The actors have been writing - you can expect to hear their own words, and they are powerful. Performances are free; no tickets required.

MCC members Patty Connelly and David and Sheryl Evelo invite members to attend a special public reception for a new exhibit at the Minneapolis Club, "Art for All: The Stephanie Evelo Fund for Art Inclusion," on Wednesday, August 29, 5:00-7:00 pm. The reception will be honoring the work of five artists, who will be on hand to greet you and tell you more about their view of the world. The Minneapolis Club is located at 729 2nd Ave S. RSVP here. Single-Evening Screen Printing: Wear Your Art
August 29, 6:00-9:00 pm, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Ave S
Learn the basics of screen printing through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on experimentation. Design and cut a stencil, and hand-pull your own prints to make a one-of-a-kind t-shirt, tote bag or bandana. Draw a design to make printed buttons. Learning Lab at the Minnesota State Fair

August 30 is Senior Day at the Minnesota State Fair and the Learning Lab will be there with gizmos and gadgets galore. If you're interested in learning more about technologies to help you age in place, go to the UCARE exhibit area located in Dan Patch Park near the Grandstand. The Lab will participate with other service providers and vendors to bring awareness to resources for seniors, family members and caregivers. $2 discount at admission gate for those 65 and older.
