CORA CONNECTION
August 2018

Downtime, what's downtime?

People often think summers are for relaxation and catching up, but not at CORA Services!  After celebrating our most successful golf outing to date, this summer at CORA was jam packed with counseling, camps, community activities and prepping for the approaching school year.

We hosted what I hope was to be the first of many CAMP CORA alumni reunions and it was a blast! Many of you may remember the original CAMP CORA which ran from 1978-2004. During that time, on our old grounds, CORA enriched the lives of thousands of local kids and young adults by creating countless memories and relationships. While the summer camp program run by CORA now is much different today than 20 years ago, the hallmarks of the program remain the same - caring and compassionate staff - and tons of fun!

Once again, CORA partnered with The Philadelphia Youth Network's WorkReady Program, recruiting and placing 40 students in positions all across CORA. Many of the spots were as counselors in training at our 5 summer camp locations and the rest were in our headquarters on Verree Road. With these enthusiastic youth in our midst, we had no choice but to keep energy levels high.

In fact, in addition to our awesome campers, counselors, and additional summer staff, the CORA community has tons of reasons to be excited. Just to name a few, we are the gracious recipients of generous grants from Independence Blue Cross Foundation, the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, and The Fund for Quality! These new funds will enable the agency to expand existing programs and services as well as embark on a few exciting new adventures - stay tuned for more information on these growth initiatives.

I am proud of the incredible work CORA's dedicated staff do to strengthen families and communities and help children overcome obstacles to success - your support fuels that effort. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to help CORA thrive.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Success of the Early Bird
The Importance of Early Intervention Services in Young Children Displaying
Possible Milestone Delays

The first five years of a child's life have such a monumental impact on their ability to succeed in the future , during the school-age years and far beyond. While this is a sensitive time for development, ground work of functioning, on all levels, and self-regulation, it is also a time of exploration and opportunity for parents to seek assistance for children who may be struggling.

Early Childhood Intervention is a service designed to redirect the factors and setbacks that may have an affect on a child's development in the present and the future. Early Intervention services not only greatly influence a child's positive outcomes and progress but also can support the entire family. Well-designed Early Intervention Programs have the capability to combine the individualized needs of the child, while incorporating those needs into the larger picture by including socialization with other students, learning through play, coping mechanisms, and even complete mastery of a skill.

Early Years La Salle Partners with Pre-K Counts

A quality preschool is designed to provide children the opportunity to ease into and become excited about the school environment while helping prepare them to be successful learners. Children ages 3- 5 need to gradually learn simple tasks like, paying attention, following directions, getting along with others, and sharing, before entering kindergarten. Often good preschool programs are expensive, thus parents wait for kindergarten to enroll their child in school. Working parents require longer days than a typical preschool schedule usually offers, so they turn to daycares. CORA understands the challenges facing working parents.

CORA's Early Years at La Salle University has been a Keystone Star Four facility for the past 5 years and parents greatly value the wonderful home away for home it is for their eager-to-learn toddlers. Early Years La Salle recently partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to participate in the Pre-K Counts Program. Starting this September,  parents may be eligible top receive financial support to prepare their children for kindergarten! Under the leadership of CORA's new site director,  p arents will be guided through the application process to see if they qualify for a Pre-K Counts spot. As always, CORA's Early Years La Salle Pre-K Counts classrooms will offer small classes with professional teachers that are passionate about early childhood education. CORA's Early Years staff are trained in curriculum to prepare preschool age children to progress academically, socially and emotionally, before entering elementary school.
