Fall 2019
Parent Update from the Executive Director

Dear CTC Parents,

This is my first update for the new school year and a lot of good things have happened already.
During the four-week summer break, the bulk of renovations of the Fair Lawn campus were successfully completed! By the second week, the rooms were stripped down and looked like this:
At the end of the renovations (week four), they looked like this:
What an amazing transformation! The final renovations will occur next August and will include the final classroom and the kitchen area. In addition, we plan to repave the parking lot and do other landscaping upgrades that will make more outside areas available for student activities.

At Oakland, we secured the final permissions required to get our pool up and running! We anticipate the first group of students (with parental permissions of course) will begin to receive aqua therapy during the latter part of October. We also had a wonderful Family Picnic in September that was sponsored by the Oakland Elks. The turnout was tremendous, there was good food as well as good music and dancing. I hope you were there!

Over the summer, we submitted a pre-certification application to the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities to possibly become a provider of adult day services. We have hired an experienced consultant to advise us on how to design the best program possible. Although we have not officially presented the information for board decision/approval, we do want to get all the required certifications in place and a program designed, so we can move as quickly as possible should we proceed. Should the board decide to move ahead, it is likely it would take a year or more to be up and running.

Coming up next, is our Special Needs Dentistry Forum on November 1st. The purpose is to educate and then encourage more local dentists to serve our students. It is a free event where dentists will receive four continuing education credits. If you know any dentists that might be interested, please direct them to this web page to register:

As always, you can contact me anytime by phone at either campus number (201-797-7440 ext. 3258 or 201-612-5677 ext. 2111) or by email at kberger@ctcacademy.org .

All the best,
Ken Berger, Executive Director

FAIR LAWN CLUBS PROGRAM
Stay tuned for next month’s OAK Clubs Program!

After a successful pilot program last school year with our building bridges classrooms, the Fair Lawn campus expanded the Friday club program to all FL CTC students. The club program provides opportunities for our students to participate in extracurricular activities on Friday afternoons between 1:30-2:00 pm through June. Therapists and teachers have collaborated to develop club protocols based on developmentally appropriate learning experiences focusing on the arts, sciences, social skills, play and fitness.

Our students will have the ability to practice functional living skills, movement and communication through group activities. The new clubs that we will be introducing this school year are include: STEM club, art club, sensory chefs, C.H.A.T. club, and games. Our earth kids club, SMILE and fun fitness will continue. The student groupings vary so that each child has an opportunity to experience new peers in a fun, social environment while learning. Participation in novel activities builds brain pathways! Check your child’s binder for notices regarding clubs!

Sibshops Program: Sibshops® is a forum for brothers and sisters who have a sibling with a developmental disability to obtain peer support and education all while having fun! It is a group designed to help siblings express their feelings in an open, safe, creative environment through interactive fun activities and group discussion.

Trained CTC staff members: Social worker, Therapist, Teachers and Teaching Assistants follow a curriculum designed by Sibshops® and work with children 6 – 13 years of age. During our time together we play games, cook, make new friends, talk with other others who, “get it” and most importantly…we have fun!

Boxes of Love: In the month of November, the Social Work Department will once again be providing, “Boxes of Love” to our CTC families in need. “Boxes of Love” are created by CTC staff as they work together to fill each box with a variety of food to help make your family’s Thanksgiving a feast to remember.

If your family is in need and interested in receiving a “Box of Love” this year, registration forms will be sent home the week of October 28th. All forms will be due back to your school social worker by Friday, November 1 st . Please contact your school social worker with any questions.

October is National PT Month – We Love Our PT’s!

Physical therapists (PT's) are movement experts who optimize quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education.
Physical therapists teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. PT's examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PT's work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
