FAR Scholarship Students Help with Annual Apricot Harvest

Apricot season in Armenia means it's time for FAR's scholarship students to help out with the harvest. Each year, about two dozen students volunteer to help out with the harvest as a way of giving back to FAR and to their community. This year, 21 students braved the heat to pick apricots in Armarvir Province. FAR has helped each farmer to develop their businesses, and in return the farmers have agreed to donate a portion of dried fruit to FAR's beneficiaries each year. "This is good work that is important and useful in all respects. Now, 1,000 of our program beneficiaries will be able to enjoy dried apricots during the coming winter," said Eduard Karapetyan, FAR's Education and Science Programs Manager. Feast of Sts. Joachim and Anna

The Armenian Church styles her Sourp Asdvadzadzin: the "Holy Mother-of-God"-an almost cosmic title which has elicited reverent love from generations of Armenian Christians, and is honored as the name of many of our churches. In more common parlance she is St. Mary: the girl of humble piety who carried the Hope of the world within her body, and delivered Him as a baby in Bethlehem.

She began life as the child of a devout Hebrew couple, whose earnest prayer was answered with the birth of a precious daughter. Tuesday, August 21, marks the Feast of Sts. Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Holy Virgin Mary-and the grandparents of our Lord Jesus Christ-who are remembered with honor in the Armenian Church.

The parents who guided Mary onto the path of holiness truly deserve to be celebrated-especially in the church season dedicated to the Holy Mother-of-God, which began last week with the Feast of the Holy Assumption.

Feast Of The Assumption Of The Holy Mother-Of-God And Name Day Of Our Church

The feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God was observed at St. Mary on August 12. Der Hovsep celebrated the Badarak which was followed by the special serve of the Blessing of Grapes.

Latter that afternoon the 1st Annual St. Mary's Picnic took place. Parishioners and friends came together for fellowship, delicious Armenian Khorovadz and other treats. The particular focus of this special day was on the children to include fun activities that included a bounce house, balloons, games and face painting.

Especial thanks to St. Mary Parish Council for hosting the event. We also thank all of the members and children of the church who attended, volunteered, supported, and enjoyed this holy day.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS

A First Look at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Armenia!" Exhibit

The hotly anticipated "Armenia!" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is set to open on September 21, 2018, and run through January 13, 2019. This major exhibition will feature rare works of Armenian art from around the world-many of them never before displayed in the United States.

Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan and the Eastern Diocese in general have taken active roles in the exhibit. One of the exceptional items on display will be the 17th-century Voskan Bible that the Diocese is lending to the Met for this special occasion.

Among other precious items on display will be a magnificent altar covering from Holy Etchmiadzin (pictured above).

In the words of exhibit curator Dr. Helen Evans (the Met's Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator of Byzantine Art, and a longtime friend of the Diocese) this will be "the first major exhibition to explore the remarkable artistic and cultural achievements of the Armenian people in a global context." Visitors will view exquisite works covering 14 centuries of Armenian history: from the 4th century, when the Armenians converted to Christianity, to the 17th century, when Armenian control of global trade routes first brought books printed in Armenian into the region.

Click here to watch Dr. Evans give an inspiring overview of the exhibit, in a short video "preview" on the Metropolitan Museum's website.

Holy Assumption at the Mother See

At the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Feast of the Holy Assumption drew large crowds of faithful on Sunday, August 12, for one of the most eagerly anticipated holy days of the Armenian Church calendar.

Bishop Arshak Khachatryan celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Mother Cathedral, then led worshippers outside to preside over the Blessing of Grapes ceremony on Etchmiadzin's large open-air altar.

Restoring School Libraries in Rural Armenia

The Fund for Armenian Relief has announced the launch of "Adopt-A-Library"-the most ambitious project yet undertaken by FAR's crowdfunding resource, "Ayo!"

The project aims to rebuild and refurbish the libraries in 17 rural Armenian schools. Most of the targeted schools already have dedicated library rooms-but the physical spaces and the collections they hold are decrepit and falling apart, subject to mold and water damage.

A group of Teach for Armenia fellows conceived a plan to change the situation on their own, refurbishing the school libraries and sparking an interest in reading among the students.

FAR's "Adopt-a-Library" effort aims to help them turn that vision into reality. "We're very excited to be part of this initiative," says Ayo! program director Laura Gevoryan. "By providing resources to rebuild the libraries, we are ultimately empowering their students."

Libraries will be created in the Lori, Tavush, Aragatsotn, Armavir, and Shirak provinces of Armenia, as well in Artsakh. Funds raised through Ayo! will purchase books, bookshelves, tables and chairs, and other critical items.

  BIBLE READING
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!" And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to genera-tion. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors." Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
