REID, Hon. Chief Justice James [1769-1848]

A RARE AND IMPORTANT EARLY QUEBEC COLLECTION OF 3,900  DOCUMENTS

The Honorable Judge James Reid was born in Scotland and came to Canada around 1788. He was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1794 and in 1807 was appointed a judge of the Court of King's Bench at Montreal. He filled the judicial office of one of the Judges of the Court of King's Bench, Lower Canada, for a period of thirty-three years, fifteen of which he presided as Chief Justice. During that time he handled many legal cases including many Fur Trade related cases including that of the North West Company. Judge Reid, was also the nephew-in-law to Simon McTavish.

POUND, Ezra Weston Loomis (1885-1972)
 
SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPIES OF POUND'S LATER WORKS

Ezra Pound was an expatriate American poet and critic, and a major figure in the early 'modernist' literature - that is, experimental literature written during the first part of the twentieth century.

The collection consists of 4 items dating from 1966 to 1979, specifically, two scarce association copies of private press books signed by Ezra Pound and both with "DP's" initials (Ezra Pound's wife Dorothy Pound) provenance. Two pieces of ephemera by Omar Shakespear Pound (1926-2010), Ezra Pound's son with one signed by the poet Omar S. CODY, Rev. Henry John [1868-1951]
 
Henry John Cody was a Canadian clergyman, politician and President of the University of Toronto from 1932 to 1945 and Chancellor from 1944 to 1947. He was an Ontario MPP for Toronto Northeast - Seat A from 1918 to 1920 and was Minister of Education from 1918 to 1919. At the University of Toronto Schools, the Cody house in the intramural house system is named in his honour.

MARKLAND, Russell (1892-1973)
 
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette was of the most famous of modern French writers and nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. She wrote over 50 novels including Gigi (1944), and "Cheri" (1920). Colette died on 3 August 1954 in her apartment in the Palais-Royal, aged 81. She was given a state funeral.

Colette Willy was included in "The 100 Most Influential Woman of All Time"  2010 edited by Kathleen Kuiper, p220

Louis Untermeyer (1885-1977) was an American poet, anthologist, critic, editor and translator of more than one hundred books for readers of all ages.. He will be best remembered as the prolific anthologist whose collections have introduced students to contemporary American poetry since 1919. Untermeyer was appointed the fourteenth Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1961.

COCKSHUTT, Henry [1868-1944]

Henry Cockshutt and family (his wife, Isabelle, and their daughters). An archive of social correspondence mainly to Isabelle Cockshutt but also to her husband, Henry Cockshutt (1868 - 1944), who was the 13th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Born in Brantford, Ontario, he started in the family business, Cockshutt Plow Company, in 1884.  He was appointed lieutenant-governor of Ontario and served in that position until 1927. From 1929 to 1944, he was the chancellor of the University of Western Ontario. He retired as president of the Cockshutt Plow Company in 1934 and became chairman of the board, which he held until his death.

This collection is comprised of approximately 25 letters, 10 Christmas cards, a pamphlet, 7 photos, and 10 other kinds of documents or cards relating to . Although there is an early letter dated 1896, most of the archive was created in the 1920s when Cockshutt was lieutenant-governor at Government House in Toronto. With the exception of a lovely photograph of Isabelle Cockshutt, all the material is housed is a black cloth linen box. The archive reveals that the Cockshutts belonged to the social elite in Canada with letters and notes from General Haig, Bying of Vimy, Olive Baden-Powell, Anne Chamberlain, the Prince of Wales, and other luminaries.

With sections "The Happy African" [2]-11 with "the Happy Nego" page titles ; "Hymn."- page 12-13 ; "Grateful servant."- page [14]-16. Pages 4-16 also numbered 20-32.

A seemingly charming little narrative carries a pointed message, wrapped in the social complexities of America's colonial era of slavery, with an account of a happenstance meeting between a slave content with his station in life, and an altruistic administrator of the colony.

Nice copy of a scarcer book than the first edition published two years prior in 1845 with only 468pp. Additional material in this volume amounts to about one third of the first edition.

Contemporary 3/4 calf, with original marbled boards. Original end papers with some spotting and label removed. Leather spine with gilt type and at  head of title: The Library of Entertaining Knowledge "28" in the middle and title at the bottom. Edges somewhat rubbed. Internally some foxing at times a little bit heavy. Some offset facing the plates, and some text pages. Otherwise, a very good and attractive copy of an important book .

Free frank dated 16 October 1803 signed by  1st Marquis Townsend from Rainham to Capt Powell of the Old Buckingham Volunteers at Attleburgh, Norfolk.  Cover has a clear black mileage mark ROUGHAM 103 (boxed).  Tear on top - once stuct down on a red page. Other than a famous Canadian historical person the added interest is the extremely rare good impression of the ROUGHAM 103 mileage mark.

Draft of a poem titled Ex Gx or EG...died aged 18 years. Signed in fountain pen. The letter is neatly sewn, at the left edge, to 1/2 inch album page flap, small red was seal at top left half covered by this strip, otherwise very good condition.

RARE MANUSCRIPT FROM A FAMOUS NOVA SCOTIA LOYALIST

8 x 13 inch autograph 4pp with 2pp letter signed, (one and one-quarter pages and docket info on last page), Nova Scotia, June 25, 1802, to William Meredith. "...I do not understand to who, the 600,000 Sterling is to be paid if to those Creditors whose Debtors were Solvent at the commencement of the Revolution... it appears His Majesty is to authorize certain persons to receive the same...  If I must come to attend the prosecutions I had rather give all up than risque myself in Jersey considering the vile Treatment I received when in Morris County am apprehensive murder would be the consequence should I come carry on prosecutions not do I see any reason for my personal attendance...."

"RADIOVISION" IMAGES ARE UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT IN SCIENCE & TV HISTORY 
 
Two original images transmitted in circa 1923 by "Radiovision" and his written and inscribed 1925 book, "Vision By Radio" Washington.

Two of  the actual photographs he transmitted c1923. There is one original in the Library of Congress in the copyright collection and seven other Radiovision with the same provenance as ours, now in a private television museum.
Charles Francis Jenkins ( 1867-1934) is recognized as the earliest major American television pioneer. C. Francis Jenkins wrote an article about a device for transmitting pictures by electricity.  Using the prismatic ring approach to mechanical television, which Jenkins invented, it was reported that he transmitted the image of a woman by radio on June 14, 1923. Abramson says "Whether 'live' or a photograph, this was the first transmission of television by radio ever reported." ( page 60)

John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (also known as Radical Jack, and commonly referred to as Lord Durham) GCB PC (12 April 1792 - 28 July 1840), was a British Whig Statesman, Colonial Administrator, Governor General and High Commissioner of British North America.  He was sent to British America in 1838 as Governor-General specially to investigate the circumstances of 1837 in Upper Canada and Lower Canada, etc.
