Message from
Chapter President
Greetings Members,

As the summer season winds down, it reminds me to enjoy the present moment and look forward to renewal and change. So I begin by saying, thank you for your past and present work, and I look forward to our collaborative service on behalf of NASW-Florida.

Each month, I will explore one NASW directive that guides our profession. For the next few months, I call your attention to the Code of Ethics, revised in 2017. Our Code of Ethics has four sections, so this month we begin with the first section, "Preamble," which summarizes the social work profession's mission and core values. Let's focus on the mission this month and move to the core values next month.

The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession's focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living.

Social workers promote social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. "Clients" is used inclusively to refer to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers are sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to end discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other forms of social injustice. These activities may be in the form of direct practice, community organizing, supervision, consultation, administration, advocacy, social and political action, policy development and implementation, education, and research and evaluation. Social workers seek to enhance the capacity of people to address their own needs. Social workers also seek to promote the responsiveness of organizations, communities, and other social institutions to individuals' needs and social problems.

In the current climate of civic discord, fear-based behaviors, and polarization, I am proud to belong to a profession committed to enhancing the well-being of all people and our larger society. We are challenged to be the voice of compassion in our communications, and use social media as an opportunity to express optimism, unity and respect. What can you begin communicating today that reflects this component of our mission?

Another component of our mission targets social justice and social change. A unique aspect of our social work mission is that it does not differentiate between our areas of specialization. The distinction of clinical versus macro practitioners that often creates a divide among us, is absent from the language. Our mission is the unifying thread that binds us with equal expectation and promise. So I ask each of you, in the current challenges around immigration; racial profiling; discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation; criminalization of communities plagued by unemployment, poverty, failing schools, and lack of access to opportunities; where are your social justice actions centered? How does your passion and activism make a difference? If each of us takes 1 small action, the collective power of change is undeniable. Our beloved social work profession needs you!
In my first newsletter article, I prepared you that soon my pleas for help would begin. Well, colleagues, the time has come! At NASW-Florida, there are multiple committees; however, I am highlighting the following committees that need additional members and leadership today:
  • Annual Conference (plans and develops the agenda, selects presenters, and provides overall support throughout the Conference)
  • Diversity (addresses diversity issues, develops and analyzes an annual survey, provides training on diversity issues)
  • Licensure and Supervision (engages with 491 Board and also promotes ethical practice in supervision and licensure, as well as provides training)
  • CCNLI (NASW-FL's CCNLI is responsible for overseeing our awards process, as well as Chapter elections)
  • Ethics (This committee focuses on responding to ethics questions, reviewing ethics violations, and providing ethics training and support)
If you are interested in becoming an active participant and leader on any of these committees, please contact me at: [email protected]. You may also reach out to Jim Akin at [email protected].
In closing, best wishes to all of the youth, school social workers, educators and personnel who returned to school this month (some more eager than others). May the enthusiasm displayed by Sidney P. Campbell (my dad) throughout his 42 years as a middle school teacher be yours to claim.  I leave you with one of his favorite quotes:  "People do amazing things, because they choose amazing things to do."

My best,

Carol

Simply use the Department's Public Data Portal to download a current list of Board approved Qualified Supervisors. For detailed instructions, use the Licensure Data Download Guide. Obtain a letter from your selected Qualified Supervisor and send to the Board Office.

Before Supervision Begins:

Verify that your intern registration number has been issued by the Department and that the Board Office has approved your qualified supervisor. To verify, click here. Supervision experience will not count towards licensure until the intern registration has been issued and the Board has approved your supervisor.

During Supervision:

The supervision experience must have consisted of:
  • At least 100 hours of supervision in no less than 100 weeks;
