Thank you to our students, teachers, staff, and parents for a very successful week #1 to open 2018-2019. We began the new school year with an enrollment of 1,474 students.

An important key to our success during the first week of school was to focus on three critical areas: building a rapport with the students, establishing rules and expectations, and motivating students to learn. Last week our teachers were developing positive working relationships with their students using various "ice breaker" activities (below). Teachers have also been reviewing the OCPS Code of Conduct, LNMS Dress Code and we practiced our first fire drill. These rules and protocols established ground rules to ensure student respect for each other and safety for all. Please note that our HERO program will begin Monday, August 20th to encourage positive student behavior and dress code choices.

If you are opening this on Sunday afternoon, enjoy the rest of your weekend and best wishes for a productive week ahead.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Monday's Motivational Moment

NEVER GIVE UP

The legendary singer Aretha Franklin died this past week at age 76. Franklin was someone who never gave up. She actually taught herself the piano at age 10 so she could imitate the notes more accurately. She learned tunes by copying musical house guests her family had over and adding her own flourishes. However, what many don't know is that by the time she was 25 she was considered almost a washout.

Franklin vowed to prove everyone wrong. She carefully chose songs that suited her voice. When she couldn't find them, she wrote them herself.

Franklin dominated the music world like few women before or since, racking up one classic hit after another and earning the title "The Queen of Soul." Regarded as one of the top vocalists ever, she's had 17 top 10 pop hits, 12 gold records and five multiplatinum records. She's also won 18 Grammy Awards, more than any other female artist.

The lesson for our Knights? Be yourself. Set goals for this school year. And most importantly, never ever give up.

Have a wonderful week Knights and please remember,
