Ann-Marie Taylor, deputy chief of the Palm Beach Police Department, is retiring from the department less than one year after she earned the title. Taylor has worked for the department for about 24 years, first as a dispatcher, then a patrol officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain, until she was named the department's first female chief during a promotion ceremony at Town Hall in October.

Why the Palm Beaches Marathon Won't Run Through Palm Beach This Year
Unlike last year, participants in this year's FITTEAM Palm Beaches Marathon will not be allowed to run through Palm Beach. The Town Council on Wednesday voted 4-1 to reject a permit request by the marathon's managing director, Kenneth Kennerly, to allow the annual race to run through about 1.2 miles of town.

West Palm City Commission Votes
to OK Okeechobee
Business District
After 18 months of public hearings, debate, study and a September vote supposedly killing the proposal, the city commission Monday night gave its final approval to create the Okeechobee Business District. The City Commission ignored all, the overriding concerns that the plan to incentivize office construction would paralyze downtown traffic and allow a 25-story luxury tower in a waterfront area that West Palm Beach voters had limited to five stories.

West Palm Beach is home to the nation's hottest mansion market, real estate brokerage Redfin said Monday. The average sale price of a luxury home sold in West Palm Beach in the second quarter soared to $2.24 million, up 85 percent from a year earlier.

It's Time to Look at Plastic Straw Ban
Town Councilwoman Bobbie Lindsay said she's looking forward to the day when the town's restaurants have seen their last plastic straw. The single-use straws often end up on the beaches or in the ocean, where they are harmful to marine life. The time is ripe for a ban now that there is a groundswell of public awareness about this environmental menace, she said.
