Hello Families,

I am looking forward to meeting all of you soon. Our teachers and staff have been hard at work these last few weeks getting ready for school and we are are all looking forward to a great year ahead! There are a few important dates and events that I want to remind you of:
  • Freshman Orientation is on Friday, August 17. All freshman are required to meet at GHS at 8:15 AM and we will head to UC Berkeley from there. We will return to campus around 3:00 PM. Students will be dismissed upon our return to school.
  • The first day of school for all students is Monday, August 20. School starts at 8:15 AM and students will be dismissed at 3:35 PM. Students will receive their schedules on this day.
  • Freshman Parent Orientation is Saturday, August 25 here at GHS from 10:30 AM - 1 PM. Come meet Gateway faculty and staff and learn about the Impact Lab. Please bring a dish, if you can, for the potluck.
  • Following this email, you will be hearing from Julie Wise, the President of our GPA (Gateway Parent's Association), asking for volunteers to help spruce up the school before school starts. Please help if you can!
  • You will be receiving an invite from me to join ParentSquare in the coming days if you have not joined already. ParentSquare is our family communications platform that provides updates from fellow GHS families and staff.

UC Berkeley High School Engineering Program

The High School Engineering Program is a great opportunity for female-identifying high school students to gain engineering and coding experience by participating in hands-on experiments and projects in a small group setting. Through this program, participants will foster a greater understanding of and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The High School Engineering Program is hosted by the Society of Women Engineers at UC Berkeley. All female-identifying high school students currently in 9th, 10th, or 11th grades are encouraged to apply. No prior engineering or computer science/programming knowledge is required! This program is designed to introduce engineering concepts from the ground up and will cover all the necessary fundamentals. The program is FREE and runs every Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, beginning September 15th and ending November 17th. Applicants need to be available and on time for all 10 Saturdays. If you expect to be absent for one or more classes, please let us know on the application. The application is open now and is due on Friday, August 31st. Apply  HERE . Teen Jobs with the de Young Museum: Museum Ambassadors

September 8, 2018 - April 27, 2019 | Saturdays

Ambassadors are high school students that work together as a team to teach and make art projects with families and the public. On Saturdays, Ambassadors visit San Francisco Public Libraries to teach art projects with families. The art projects will be inspired by objects in our permanent collection and our spring special exhibition,  Monet: The Late Years. Here are links to the Museum Ambassador   job description and teen job application. This is a paid position open to all high school students.

Oasis for Girls

Earn money and learn new skills! Oasis For Girls helps young women develop positive decision making, healthy self expression, and education and job skills to succeed in high school and beyond while cultivating sisterhood and leadership in social justice. The three programs offered are: ENVISION Career Exploration, RISE Life Skills, CREATE Arts Education. Summer applications are due by September 9. Apply HERE.

Mission Bit Web Design 101

This course is specifically designed for students of all skill levels. Students will learn HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, as well as some core programming concepts through project based instruction. Throughout the semester, students will build 3 websites: an adventure game, a portfolio, and a final project of their choice. Mission Bit offers other classes as well at other school locations that GHS students are welcome to apply to,  including mobile application and video game design development.   • Attend our first monthly Coffee with Mr. Rodgers - Tuesday, September 4, 8-9AM, in the conference room next to the main office. Meet our new principal and members of our family community. We'll also talk about ways to get in involved.
  • Contribute food or help with our monthly Teacher Appreciation Lunch - Friday, September 14 - SIGN-UP
  • Box up, remove, and find a new home for a bunch of books - novels, nonfiction, etc. Contact Molly Orner

  • Donate floor lamps to the Learning Center. Drop-off in main office.

Hola familias,

Estoy deseando conocerlos pronto. ¡Nuestros maestros y el personal se han estado reuniendo durante las últimas dos semanas y esperamos un gran año por delante! A medida que miramos hacia el nuevo año, hay algunas fechas importantes y eventos de los cuales quiero recordarles:
  • Orientación para estudiantes del noveno grado es el viernes, 17 de Agosto. Todos los estudiantes del noveno grado deben reunirse en GHS a las 8:15 AM y de allí nos dirigiremos a UC Berkeley. Regresaremos al campus alrededor de las 3:00 p.m. Los estudiantes podrán irse a casa  en cuanto regresemos a la escuela.
  • El primer día de clases para todos los estudiantes es el lunes 20 de Agosto. Las clases comienzan a las 8:15 AM y terminarán a las 3:35 PM. Los estudiantes recibirán sus horarios en este día.
  • La orientación para padres del noveno grado es el sábado, 25 de Agosto de 10:30 AM a 1 PM aquí en GHS. Venga a conocer a los profesores y al personal de Gateway y aprenda sobre el Impact Lab. Por favor, traiga un platillo para compartir, si puede.
  • Después de mi correo electrónico, también escuchará de Julie Wise, la Presidenta de nuestro GPA (Asociación de Padres de Gateway), pidiendo voluntarios para ayudar a arreglar la escuela antes de que comiencen las clases. ¡Por favor ayude si puede!
  • A finales de esta semana, recibirán una invitación mía para registrarse a ParentSquare, si aún no lo han hecho. ParentSquare es nuestra plataforma de comunicación familiar que brinda noticias para las familias y el personal de GHS.

Programa de ingeniería de UC Berkeley para Escuela Secundaria

El programa de Ingeniería para escuelas secundaria es una gran oportunidad para que las alumnas de secundaria identificando a mujeres a que adquieran experiencia en ingeniería y codificación al participar en experimentos prácticos y proyectos en grupos pequeños. A través de este programa, los participantes fomentarán una mayor comprensión e interés en la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas (STEM). El Programa de ingeniería de la escuela secundaria es organizado por la Society of Women Engineers de UC Berkeley. Todos los estudiantes de secundaria identificando a mujeres actualmente en 9 °, 10 ° o 11 ° grado son alentados a postularse. ¡No se requiere conocimientos previos de ingeniería o informática / programación! Teen Jobs con el Museo de Young: Embajadores del Museo

Los embajadores son estudiantes de secundaria que trabajan juntos en equipo para enseñar y hacer proyectos de arte con las familias y el público. Los sábados, los embajadores visitan las bibliotecas públicas de San Francisco para enseñar proyectos de arte con las familias. Los proyectos de arte estarán inspirados en objetos de nuestra colección permanente y nuestra exposición especial de primavera,   Monet: los ultimos anos. Aquí hay enlaces con la  descripcion del trabajo para Embajador del Museo  y  solicitud de empleo para los adolescentes. E sta es una posicion pagada abierta para todos los estudiantes de secundaria.

Gana dinero y aprende nuevas habilidades! Oasis For Girls ayuda a las mujeres jóvenes a desarrollar una toma de decisiones positiva, una auto expresión saludable y habilidades educativas y laborales para tener éxito en la escuela secundaria y más allá mientras cultivan la hermandad y el liderazgo en la justicia social.
