News from the TBA
A Message from Brian K. Will, TBA President

We are excited to share with you the unprecedented success the 2020 TBA Parade of Homes Digital tour has experienced since beginning on the traditional weekend of Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 9.

The TBA has turned lemons into lemonade by twisting what could have been a canceled Parade Event to one that is providing the parade builders and community more exposure than a traditional event alone. Plus, we are excited that most of the homes will also be available for the walking tour.

The annual Smokey Young Golf Tournament, at Golden Eagle Country Club, was a huge success and sold out with 76 golfers and hole sponsors. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Please visit www.tallyba.com to view the online digital Parade of Homes tour and digital Parade of Homes Magazine. Between the reports coming in weekly for the Digital Tour, google analytics from the TBA website, and the digital marketing campaign currently running with marketing strategies like geofencing and targeted digital display ads, all results are extremely above average in page views, click through visits, length of viewing time and hits, and the best thing is that we finally have the data to share with the builders and sponsors to show them the value of their investment with TBA events!

Don’t miss out on the traditional walk through Parade of Homes Event taking place on June 6 & 13, from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and June 7 & 14, 12:00 – 5:00 pm. The printed Parade of Homes Magazines have been distributed to Capital City Bank branches, our proud Parade Magazine Sponsor. To obtain your free magazine, visit www.tallyba.com for the listing of branch locations – please note, all magazines have been placed in racks outside for your convenience and CDC guideline posters will be displayed at each home. The TBA is proud to be the first Builders Association in the Panhandle area to offer our annual parade event, golf outing and saltwater fishing tournament.

The 32nd annual TBA Saltwater Fishing Tournament is right around the corner on June 20 th . Several boats and sponsors have already signed up. Don’t miss out! Plus - save the date of October 23 rd for the TBA Clay Shoot at Talon Range!

On another note, Jodi sincerely thanks everyone for your prayers and support of the recent devastation of her hometown in Michigan because of flooding from two dams failing.  By the grace of God, no one was hurt or lost their lives because of this tragedy but things will never be the same.

Brian K. Will, as 2020 TBA President

Decorative Tile

Decorative tile is often added to the design to give it a special focal point, to give it some extra zing. Sometimes a listello (from listel, which is a narrow band in architecture)—usually a strip of varying material and various sizes--is made by the manufacturer especially to coordinate with the tile. There are also all kinds of possibilities using mosaics. They can be made of stone, glass, shell, metal, wood, or ceramic or porcelain tiles.

The smaller the tile gets, the more it costs as a general rule. Mosaics can get expensive, mostly because they are highly detailed and have to be assembled by hand. I once used an iridescent glass tile in a shower that was $77.00 for each piece. The pieces were less than a square foot. Not all mosaics are that expensive, but you can expect to pay $20.00+ a square foot. Listellos will be priced similarly and sold by the piece, usually about a linear foot.

Using a mosaic that is sold by the square foot can be more economical than using a listello. Depending on the design, a square foot can yield multiple linear feet while a listello will yield around one linear foot.

One of the most popular uses of decorative tile is for kitchen backsplashes. A kitchen backsplash is typically around 20 square feet. That much space covered by something that costs $20+ a square foot can get costly.

The key to using decorative tile is to use it sparingly if cost is an issue. I like to find a field tile—the primary tile being used—that is relatively inexpensive and jazz it up. The tiles in a mosaic can be used simply as dots of color and texture in the field.

Most kitchen cabinets are installed 18 inches above the countertop, giving a decent sized area to work with. Sometimes there is a 4 inch backsplash of the same material as the countertop, reducing the area to 14 inches. It generally looks better to create a design that has a pattern that will fill the entire space without chopping up the tile. If the space changes size at some point, such as getting larger above the stove, the design can change as well. A focal point can be made manipulating the same tile in a different way.

Sometimes an entire project is developed for the decorative tile. I helped a client remodel two bathrooms. The design of both bathrooms--colors, textures, shapes--were created completely around decorative tile she found that she loved.
