Tell Congress: 'No Performance Tax'
The Recording Academy will hold its annual "Grammys in my District" grassroots advocacy event on October 2. It is important for members of Congress to hear from broadcasters about the impact of a performance royalty on local broadcasters. We need you to contact your Representative between now and October 2 and ask them to stand with local broadcasters against a Performance Tax.  Read More

$15,000 Fine and Short-Term License Renewal Proposed for Radio Station Missing Issues Programs Lists in Its Online Public Inspection File

On September 20, the FCC's Audio Division released its first decision in the current renewal cycle addressing the issue of incomplete public inspection files and missing Quarterly Issues Programs List, proposing to fine an AM station in Virginia $15,000 for apparently not having any Issues Programs Lists in its online public inspection file for the entire renewal term. The decision should serve as a warning to broadcasters to make sure that their online files are complete and up to date. Read More

FCC Offers KidVid Compliance Guide To Small TV Stations
With the recent revision of the Children's Television Programming rules, the FCC has released a Small Entity Compliance Guide aimed at smaller TV stations and other organizations to help them comply with the revised rules.  Read More

Budget Sent to Governor
The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that with just a week to spare, the GOP-lead Michigan Legislature finished work Tuesday on a $59.9 billion budget for the 2020 fiscal year that includes $120 million for water infrastructure improvements and treatment of PFAS and other contaminants in water systems across the state.  Read More

An SBE Ennes Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 8 at Lansing Community College's West Campus. Registration is $40 and includes sessions, food and beverage. Former WION News Director Harry Boyes Passes Away at 95
The MAB has learned that Harry Boyes, former longtime News Director of WION-AM (Ionia) passed away at the age of 95 on September 20.  Boyes served as News Director for the station beginning in the mid-1950s through 1970.  Read More

Michigan Radio to Debut New Podcast 'Same Same Different'
Michigan Radio has announced a new podcast, Same Same Different, which will tackle issues like When your buddies tell you "we like you because you're not like most black people," should you throw down or lay low? How do you support your transgender kid when their own sibling thinks transgender is a misguided choice? What makes someone an "other," anyway? and more over five episodes, starting October 7.  Read More

Meet Your MAB Staff Member of the Week: Denise Weston
Denise Weston is currently the Director of Membership and Services for the Michigan Association of Broadcasters where she has worked since 1998. Denise manages the NCSA/PEP program working with over 30 campaigns annually and utilizes donated inventory from over 350 member television and radio stations to provide maximum statewide exposure for non-profit and governmental organizations. She has almost 30 years of broadcast experience including traffic. Previously, she was the Director of the Eaton Rapids Child Care Center managing 25 teachers and 275 enrolled students. She graduated from Lansing Community College with a dual Associates Degree in Arts and Business Management and has also received an Infant/Toddler CDA certification.  Continued education includes Spring Arbor College with an emphasis in grant writing and Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) certifications for Radio Marketing Professional (RMP) and Certified Digital Marketing Consultant (CDMC). She is a single mother of two adult daughters.
