Heat Vulnerability during the Pandemic
NYC Health issued a health alert
on identifying and aiding people at risk for heat-related illness and death, with special considerations for the pandemic. New York State is providing funds for eligible people to purchase and install air conditioning units as stay-at-home guidance can increase risk of heat-related illness and death for New Yorkers without air conditioning who are living with chronic conditions, take certain medications, have limited mobility, and/or misuse drugs or alcohol.

Serious Adverse Health Events Associated with Methanol-Based Hand Sanitizers
On July 5, the CDC issued a
health advisory
directing the public to seek immediate medical attention and contact poison control (1-800-222-1222) if they have swallowed an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or rub (ABHSR) or are experiencing symptoms from repeated use of these products; to stop using any ABHSR on the FDA recall list; and to never swallow ABHSR or use for any purpose other than hand hygiene.
The CDC advises clinicians to “
have a high index of suspicion for methanol poisoning
when a patient presents with a history of ABHSR ingestion or repeated use of these products on the skin. Signs and symptoms include headache, blurred vision or blindness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of coordination, decreased level of consciousness, and laboratory findings such as anion gap metabolic acidosis.” Read the full

What Patients and Providers Need to Know about the Metformin Recall
In June 2020, the FDA announced that laboratory testing revealed levels of NDMA above the agency’s acceptable intake limit in several lots of the extended-release (ER) formulation of metformin, a medication that is used for diabetes. NMDA is a common contaminant found in food and water, which everyone is exposed to at some level. When these levels are above acceptable limits over long periods of time, it could lead to an increase in the risk of cancer. Hence, the FDA is recalling some of the metformin ER formulations.
FDA recommendations for this recall:
- Patients should call their pharmacy to inquire if this recall affects them
- Patients taking recalled ER metformin should continue taking it until a doctor or pharmacist gives them a replacement or a different treatment option
- Patients with type 2 diabetes could face dangerous health risks if they stop taking their prescribed metformin
- Health care professionals should continue to prescribe metformin when clinically appropriate; FDA testing has not shown NDMA in immediate release (IR) metformin products (the most commonly prescribed type of metformin)
