The FY20 Request for Applications for Iowa 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants has been released by the Iowa Department of Education. Applications for funding are due December 13, 2019. To review application materials and to apply, please visit the Iowa Department of Education website.
The Iowa Department of Education, supported by the Iowa Afterschool Alliance, provides technical assistance throughout the application timeline. The following TA events are open to the public:
- Wednesday, October 16, 2019; 10 am: Central Iowa Application TA Meeting at Adel Public Library, 303 S 10th St, Adel, IA 50003.
- Wednesday, October 23, 2019; 10 am: Western Iowa Application TA Meeting at Iowa Western Community College Room 137, 705 Walnut St, Atlantic, IA 50022.
Recommendations for funding are made to the Iowa Department of Education through a peer review process. The Iowa Afterschool Alliance is seeking peer reviewers from across the state to help determine which applications are funded. Peer reviewers are provided a stipend and compensated for travel to the Des Moines area. Key dates reviewers must be available are:
- Thursday, December 5, 2019; 10:30 am to 12:30 pm: Peer Reviewer Training (online)
- December 18, 2019 - January 17, 2020: Applications are reviewed and scored
- Wednesday, January 22, 2020; 10:00 am to 3:00 pm: Peer Review Conference in the Des Moines area

KAHOOT
Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that can be accessed by a web browser on any device or via the Kahoot app. It's free! It's engaging! Don't have enough devices for every student? Partner them up and try team mode! Kahoot has a variety of pre-made quizzes available (for free) from grammar to social studies to the NFL and beyond.
JIGSAW
The "Jigsaw" Method can be used to promote student collaboration along with allowing each individual a higher sense of ownership and accountability. In conjunction, this method allows for the classroom teacher to break assignments into smaller parts. Here's one of many variations of this method:
- Arrange students in groups.
- Each group member is assigned a different piece of information.
- Group members then join with members of other groups assigned the same piece of information, and research and/or share ideas about the information.
- Students then return to their original groups to try to "piece together" a clear picture of the topic at hand.
GUIDED GROUP DISCUSSION
Looking for an effective way to do group discussion that will promote thinking, learning, problem solving, and understanding? Well Guided Group Discussion is one strategy that can accomplish the task. Guided Group Discussion is an active learning strategy that encourages student engagement. Questions are already formulated to either guide the discussion and/or provide a starter for conversation. Thus allowing students to be able to run the discussion in a simple and effective way. New Report Confirms: Juvenile Crime Peaks Between 2-6 p.m.
|

The hours immediately after school lets out were first dubbed the "Prime Time for Juvenile Crime" in a report published by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids in 2000. Since the time of that first report, participation in afterschool programs has grown by more than 60%, and juvenile crime has decreased by 70%.
We hope this new report and the accompanying website, which includes state-level data for 46 states and examples of afterschool programs in all 50 states, will help more stakeholders recognize the value of afterschool and more young people access quality afterschool opportunities in the future.

October 24 is Lights On! Afterschool
|
 Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things-such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry-and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
In Iowa, Governor Reynolds has proclaimed October 24 Lights On Afterschool Day. Be sure to host your own event to celebrate with programs across the country!

Iowa is making it into political news a lot lately. Iowa always factors prominently on presidential hopefuls' schedules as they reach out to voters and test their messages with Iowans.
