It may be August, but all eyes are on November. In the latest poll, Maryland's Republican Governor Larry Hogan holds a commanding lead over his Democratic opponent Ben Jealous. Hogan leads Jealous 52 percent to 36 percent with 11 percent of likely voters undecided. The poll was conducted by Gonzales Research and Media Services.
Rep. John Delaney (MD-6) has officially visited all 99 counties in Iowa in his bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president. Senator Ben Cardin now faces an additional challenger in his run for re-election. Businessman Neal Simon gathered the 10,000 signatures required by Maryland law to get his name on the ballot as an Independent.
COMMITTEE LEADERSHIP
There have been some shifts in committee leadership assignments in Annapolis following the outcome of the June primaries. Senator President Mike Miller appointed Senator Dolores Kelly of Baltimore County as Chair, and Senator Brian Feldman of Montgomery County as Vice Chair, of the Senate Finance Committee. House Speaker Michael Busch named Delegate Eric Bromwell as Vice Chair of the House Economic Matters Committee which will continue to be led by Delegate Dereck Davis of Prince George's County. Both of these committees typically consider legislation impacting credit unions.
DC UPDATE
The DC Government is moving toward implementation of the Universal Paid Leave Act which provides up to eight weeks of parental leave, six weeks of family leave to care for an ill family member, and two weeks of medical leave. On July 1, 2019, the District will begin the collection of taxes from employers and on July 1, 2020, the District will begin administering paid leave benefits. To assist employers, DC government has released a new FAQ sheet.
A bill to protect seniors from financial exploitation is under review by the DC Council. The legislation requires
mandatory reporting of suspected financial exploitation of seniors and vulnerable adults by banks, credit unions, insurers, investment advisors and other institutions.
It also provides for notification of potential financial exploitation to authorized designated third parties.
