BUFFALO CREEK PROJECT
Business partnership provides generous resources to CCS teachers, students

Visitors to the Carrollton City Schools campus over the past few years may have noticed some unusual activity around Buffalo Creek and its tributaries - students wearing wading boots, fishing nets in hand, splashing through the water. But what appears to be a leisurely experience rather than an academic one couldn't be further from the truth.

Carrollton City Schools is fortunate to have many community partnerships with some garnering the spotlight early on in the relationship, while others churn in the background doing great things with little fanfare. One such partnership involves C.S. Britton, Inc., an environmental contracting company. The creek activity above is really the result of a partnership with the Carrollton-based business to expose K-12 students to the fundamentals of stream restoration. The project has been formally titled the Natural Channel Design/Buffalo Creek Project.

Scott Britton, the company's owner and brainchild of the partnership, brought the idea to the school district a few years ago with implementation really getting under way in 2016. Britton wants students to become more aware of career options in this under-promoted field.

He also wanted to help schools enhance their science curriculum with a hands-on exposure to not only nature in all its glory, but to the scientific tools and analytical skills used in myriad science fields from ecology to hydrology to biology to environmental science. MORE
Math performance strong on Milestones
Carrollton City Schools' continued focus on math support proved to be a successful formula once again, following the previous year's lead in exceeding state averages on the Georgia Milestones math assessments systemwide, according to data released by the Georgia Department of Education.

Carrollton High School exceeded the state average in virtually all testing areas, in some cases surpassing the state by double-digit percentages, such as in coordinate algebra and analytic geometry by 14.7 and 10.7 percentage points, respectively. Seventh graders at Carrollton Junior High School also exceeded the state and improved over the previous year's class and the eighth grade cohort taking high school-level coordinate algebra earned a 100 percent proficient score.

"Math was a strength across the board, confirmation that an intentional focus on teacher and student support continues to yield positive results," said Anna Clifton, assistant superintendent of Teaching and Learning.  MORE
Setting examples and leading the way

Continuing a long tradition of community service, Trojan football players visited CES classrooms Friday to read books and participate in other classroom activities with their eager "fans," who consider each Trojan a celebrity in his own right. The Trojans officially open the 2018 season next Friday against East Coweta at the University of West Georgia. See more photos on FACEBOOK.
SWEA enters eighth year of training future engineers

The latest cohort of Southwire Engineering Academy students listen to Theresa Fischer, Southwire training specialist who also serves as SWEA's program facilitator, during an orientation session held Aug. 10 in the Trojan Hall of Fame room. Since the fall of 2011, almost 200 Carrollton High School students have experienced the internship program. "Many of them have gone on to launch their own engineering careers, while others have chosen different paths," said CCS Supt. Dr. Mark Albertus, who was CHS principal when the program started. "Either way, SWEA taught them important lessons in leadership, teamwork, innovation and perseverance. We are truly grateful for Southwire's continued commitment to this program and look for many more years of collaboration."
