New leadership at LACOE

Erika Torres , former executive director of Student Health and Human Services at LAUSD, has been appointed LACOE's new deputy superintendent. Arthur Cunha has joined the Office as its new chief human resources officer, previously serving as assistant superintendent of Personnel Services in Temple City USD.
Peace project inspires court school students

Students at LACOE's McAuliffe HS were encouraged as an act of service to participate in a Museum of Tolerance project to gather 1.5 million paper cranes in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust. Students and staff created more than 1,700 origami cranes, some of which were on display at the museum.

Developing trauma-informed schools to promote student success and safety

District teams are invited to kick off the academic year at a Sept. 17 event that will offer in-depth training on trauma exposure, campus safety and mental health in school communities. Organized by LACOE, County Mental Health and UCLA.

Juvenile hall mural reflects youth's aspirations

The recent unveiling of the "Wall of Inclusion" at Central Juvenile Hall marked completion of the 20th large-scale mural created by students under the direction of professional artists thanks to a longtime partnership among LACOE, Probation and the nonprofit  Theatre of Hearts/Youth First .

Civic learning event set for Sept.15

The Annual Constitution Day Conference offers a wealth of resources for K-12 teachers and kicks off  an entire year of civic learning that prepares students to be informed, engaged citizens. The event offers interactive workshops and free lessons. Deadline to register is Sept. 5.

LACOE recently held its annual Road To Success Academy Celebration of Learning, featuring student performances and testimonials on how RTSA has changed young people's lives. Co-emcee Shirley Garcia credited the award-winning RTSA program for turning her life around, from court school student to aspiring lawyer.
