Infectious Disease Risks and Caring for Patients
Some risk of contracting illness is inherent in caring for patients. One of the fundamental tenets of the practice of medicine is that physicians care for patients despite this risk. Education about potential infectious agents, their routes of transmission, and appropriate prevention and control procedures is an essential part of all infection control programs. The  AAMC Infectious Diseases Handbook serves to prepare health care workers to reduce the risks to themselves and to their patients. Infectious diseases change over time. New pathogens emerge and old pathogens reemerge to pose greater risks. The recommendations presented in this monograph are those widely accepted in 2006. Should new issues arise, the CDC should be consulted. Information on the health related policies for the School of Medicine can be found in the MUSM Student Handbook.
