MOA's Mini Medical School Teams Up with Greg Kelser Basketball Camp
The MOA Mini Medical School is an added station where the campers learn about health, vaccinations and how to prepare for a career in medicine. "Thanks to the MOA!" said Kelser. "Your group really helps us set ourselves apart from other camps." With the older students the discussion included opportunities at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), including the OsteoChamps and Future Docs programs.
The MOA would like to thank our volunteers, Matthew Wolf, MSU Lyman Briggs student and Lauren Donley, MSUCOM Class of 2021, for their time in helping to spread the word of good health and to inspire the DOs of tomorrow.

Safe Opioid Update
As the new regulations regarding prescribing take effect, the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) continues to work with the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) division of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to clarify the new rules and the issues physicians face in day-to-day practice.
During a recent meeting with stakeholder groups and LARA, concerns were raised regarding the process of filing a Public Health Code (PHC) complaint regarding a colleague's actions. MDHHS has responded with a revised complaint form and an FAQ regarding the complaint process.

Become a change-maker with
AOA's Training in Policy Studies program
|
The TIPS program provides residents with specialized instruction on navigating policy issues that impact patient care and well-being.
The Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) program is a policy-based program that provides an understanding of current health care policy issues while also providing leadership opportunities.
Sessions will focus on physician payment models, health care reform, the Higher Education Act re-authorization, the opioid epidemic and current public health issues. Participants will gain experience in writing policy briefs and white papers, oral testimony, media training, and more.
This program serves as an initial leadership and policy program for residents wishing to become more active within the osteopathic profession. TIPS fellows have gone on to participate in the Health Policy Fellowship program, which has produced over 20 deans and college of osteopathic medicine presidents.

McLaren Bay Region to launch partial hospitalization behavioral health program; first in Great Lakes Bay Region
This month McLaren Bay Region will launch a new program to help people struggling with behavioral health issues in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Called the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the new service provides a voluntary day treatment program for adults who have acute behavioral health symptoms, but do not need or qualify for inpatient care. The program is a comprehensive, short term service to help individuals achieve their maximum functioning.

To better serve our members:
The Michigan Osteopathic Association, under the newly finalized Association Health Plan Executive Order has the opportunity to expand benefit options and remove some benefit mandates currently in place by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Highlights of an Association Health Plan for MOA members can include:
* Allowing sole proprietors to participate in the large group association plan coverage
* Pooled pricing with three tier rating (single/two person/family vs. member level/age rating)
* Opportunity for flexibility to design coverage to meet the membership needs of our association
* Removal of some small group benefit mandates currently imposed on small employer groups
The combination of some, or all of the above items is expected to provide premium savings and rate stability.
MOA Staff is working on developing group medical, dental, vision, group life and disability coverages that will be exclusively offered to our association membership.

Back to School Press Conference Spells out the benefits of immunizations
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) is a proud member of the Parent Information Network (PIN) that works to promote immunization and to combat legislative efforts to reduce the immunization requirements that protect Michigan school children.
A press conference was held at the Ingham County Health Department to raise awareness of the positive benefits of immunization, for both those who vaccinate and those who can't. The awareness effort coincides with 2018 National Immunization Awareness Month (#NIAM18), and the fact that Michigan children will soon be headed back to school.
The PIN group also spearheaded the efforts to create the "I Vaccinate" media campaign that has been on TV, radio, billboard and online advertisements. The campaign has been successful over the last two years and has been funded through 2019.

MSU students learn to be physicians while providing clinical care to Detroit's homeless
Detroit Street Care is featured in a WKAR report that captures the spirit of the organization. The program is an outreach activity where Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) students provide medical assistance to the homeless. Through the program, medical students at the college's Detroit Medical Center site, offer clinical care to the city's homeless population with supervision from physicians Richard Bryce, DO, and Mary Jo Voelpel, DO.
Detroit Street Care participated in the Michigan Osteopathic Association's 119th Annual Spring Scientific Convention with a presentation during the House of Delegates. They were also given exhibitor space where they were able to explain their mission and raise donations for the program.

Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center hosts Celebration
The Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center is inviting clients, team members, and the community to celebrate their new therapeutic green space with an Outdoor Concert & Celebration. It will be a fun filled evening with a host of food trucks, kid friendly activities, tours of the campus and live music.
This is a free event. Complimentary, non-alcoholic beverages will be provided for all attendees. The concert will begin at 6:00 pm. Origami encourages attendees to bring blankets or folding chairs to use during the concert as their is a limited number of seating options onsite.
